{L_QUOTE}:
let's hope the votes to YLF were from the old ones, at least once they die there's still hope for HK to be a better place

Hmm, what I saw on main street was that local young men were pushing their aunties and uncles--those old people who barely knew what was going on, to the polling station. So it's not only the old folks, but once they're gone surely there will be fewer votes for Ms YLF.

But by then the CCP would have a firm grasp of Hong Kong.

The DAB and their "independent" candidates seemed to have won big in this elections, as usual.

Sad day for Lamma, sad day for Hong Kong.

Still YLF went from uncontested to a 483 votes AGAINST her. Let's hope that trend continues in that direction!

If she pushes more forward with her "development" plan it should get even more bad publicity one can hope...

I dont understand why again in the above article YLF is pushing the emergency access angle. Surely it doesnt make a difference for a patient if they are able to get to the pier in much less time (30 seconds is a joke) if they then have to travel on the ferry for 25 minutes and then be transported from the Central pier to a hospital!!! For any cases where a few minutes difference is going to make a difference to the patient surely they would be airlifted. So her argument is completely redundant.

I think that some of you need to put yourself in the shoes of the 'local people' as you call them. Why would they vote for someone who is young, they don't know, clearly inexperienced, seems to them to have a quite fixed restrictive agenda - environmental protection. What does this have to do with their lives?

They know YLF. It would be frightening I am sure to think of Damon in there. I voted for Damon because YLF needs to understand that there is opposition and hopefully this will keep her in line to a certain extent, but I don't presume to think that other people who have lived on Lamma for generations should think the way that I do. A

nd there will be no serious opposition to her until someone stands against her who has more of a presence in Yung Shue Wan and more than just an environmental policy, looking at things like facilities and employment opportunities for local people.

She knows it's bullshit - but who cares? It's work, it's jobs for the boys.

A road bridge to Macau and Zuhai? Utterly ridiculous - but it's happening ...

That was the excuse when it was first proposed, over 10 years ago. And of course since then they've built the helipad adjacent to the clinic.

And the ambulance station isn't at the clinic anyway. So WTF?
It's going to take the ambulance 10 minutes to get to the clinic from their station on a Sunday.

If you want to reduce response time for ambulance and fire to Main Street and the pier (for whatever reason) they should make a trafficable link from the fire station down through Yung Shue Long and straight to the middle of Main Street. That wouldn't take 30 seconds, but it would shave a few minutes and that path has very low traffic. They could put a gate at the top to keep VVs off it if necessary.

Currently there is a stairway on that path. For no logical reason, instead of doing that fairly simple bit of roadworks on a short section of the path, they preferred to make it go the long way, using it as an excuse to build up the detour, including the $55 million reclamation.

Of course, since we don't have a doctor at the clinic on Sunday, it's all pretty pointless.

What would it cost to have 24-hour doctor on Lamma? Maybe $500,000 a year? The reclamation could cover that for a century. People have died for lack of prompt medical care here, (David Slough) and in a typhoon, a high risk time for accidents, they couldn't use the helipad at all.

Let's just hope all our typhoons are during office hours when we have a doctor on hand. (Though when a #8 is called and the clinic is closed I expect the doctor catches the next ferry home to HK.)

I approached YLF in the village yesterday morning and asked her what she would do about the dog poisoning if re-elected. She pretended not to speak English and tried to walk me to the voting station to.

That's a pretty good result given the circumstances.

In another 4 years success is a distinct possibility if your willing to work hard in between.

What's needed is to get more people who live here to first register to vote, and then to actually turn out come the election. The DAB is very good at shepherding its supporters to the polls.

Also to verify that those currently registered really live here.

I heard, for instance, that the DAB got a ferry to bring over a boatload of grannies who now live in Aberdeen to vote in Sok Kwu Wan.

There are 5000 or more people living here, only about 2000 registered (and some of those not really residents, as above). Newer residents are unlikely to be DAB supporters, so getting a few hundred signed up would radically change the situation.

I voted for DW of course, but here's a bit of advice:

1. Of course the dog thing is important, but it needed 1/10 the time and number of people who worked on it. There an unbelievable amount of e-mails re a letter that I could have written at the office in 1 hour, and then checked with a few others before sending.

2. DW: Why the hell did you not get campaigners out in August ensuring that your likely voters made sure to register? You probably missed two hundred votes because of this, maybe more. I heard so many people lamely say, 'I would have voted for DW, but I didn't register' Lame, really lame.

In fact you could have had a computer right there, and helped these people register in 5 minutes.

I was not impressed at all that this was not done. Next time try planning ahead.

Registration closed 16 July.
See Please register to vote in the District Council elections here.

I despair at how people with the precious right to vote can't bothered to do so.

aardvark,
people were repeatedly invited to register in June and July, through this website and facebook, by Living Lamma, by friends, neighbours etc. Registratiom forms were available at Green Cottage, Just Green, Lammamama etc. I personally handed out 20-30 forms.

The problem is that a lot of potential supporters of Damon are not permanent residents yet and therefore cannot vote. In 4 years the situation will be better.

>>> This is strange because I know a person on Lamma, who had 3 kids born here, and lived here for 20 years or so, yet the government can't find it in their heart to naturalize her or however, and allow her to vote? Although she was a resident and she has 3 HK born kids? She would have voted for Damon.

And Damon, dont' give up, yeah, just work with the free powers you have as a citizen and stay active with the groups here, and build, I think foreign body already made some headways a few years ago with the Agri-Fish guys, about the potential with working with sanitation as volunteers to help them clean up Sham Wan.

or heck get that tire off Ngai Wan, by the yuppie place... that would be a great start. Say how DID that thing float up on shore? lol.

Isn't the 7 year permanent residency the only requirement though? No need to naturalize anybody.

you are a permanent resident of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ....

and to be a PR:

Foreigners (persons not of Chinese nationality) who have lived in Hong Kong lawfully for 7 years and have taken Hong Kong as their permanent place of residence

But specifically excluding "foreign domestic helpers", which is what a current court case is about.

Whether you like YLF or not - its a bit off saying that all the people who voted for her were basically old mindless people who are unable to form an opinion of their own - while the people who voted against her seem to be being protrayed as the wise and informed folk of the island.

It was a democratic process and twice as many voters voted for her than for the next opposing candidate. While YLF has been unopposed for a long time - things are changing and new people are entering the race - although they lost they didnt do too badly considering its their first attemp to bump YLF off her throne
.
As things stand - while you may not like it - the majority of the voters seem to want her to remain in her position - if there was any voting irregularity - accusations should be backed up at least with a bit of evidence rather than hearsay.

I imagine that she may fall in the next election once the opposing candiates become more skilled in campaigning and securing support from different sectors, but the democratic process seems to have been executed fairly.

In this case, the two main candidates seem to be at the very extremes of the environmental issue - Yu Lai Fan the "Concrete Queen" and Damon "Earth Child" Wong - Perhaps a candidate who can occupy the middle ground in this particular arena with a bit more experience than Damon may have a better chance of winning some of the voters over.
