Emails from Julia:
"If you have time can you please publicise that I am arranging a small get-together at the Bookworm on next Monday 4th April, 7.30pm-9.30pm. This will be a Remembrance for Janet and a thank you from me for all the nice messages, offers of help and support I've received across the last two weeks. Anyone is welcome to drop by. The funeral will be held on Wednesday 13th April in the UK where around 400 people are expected to attend.
Miss Gilson had been an ordained Salvation Army officer since 1969 and held a number of senior positions around the UK, including at the Leigh church, but also devoted her energies to helping the church expand its work overseas.
Major John said: “Her most exciting work was in the Nineties when she worked with the newly-emerging Salvation Army in Russia, and was involved there for several years as it became established, and she also helped train Salvation Army leaders in Russia.”
He paid tribute to Miss Gilson’s devotion to her calling, and spoke of how she would never shy away from being firm when circumstances called for it. He said: “She was the sort of woman who didn’t mince her words and she could be formidable in some ways, but she had such a huge heart and so much compassion and love for people from all walks of life of all ages. This is a great loss.”
He added: “She has impacted the lives of hundreds, if not thousands of people right across the globe. She was quite unique.”
Thanks
Julia Fareed"
