Paul is much better known in YSW than Damon and has quite a few a friends that will support him, people that perhaps would not have voted at all or might have voted for YLF, so the effect of Paul standing is not all negative. It will be interesting to see the DM + PL vote gets into the range of YLF's. With the concrete queen's grip over the construction and property clans and the dim-sum granny vote, along with the DAB's resources backing her, I doubt she has much to worry about.

I disagree that Paul is better known. I have never seen him, he has never been involved in any campaign to protect Lamma from the "dump and concrete" gang. If his friends used to vote for YLF, then i hope they will vote for him this time. Fewer votes for YLF is good news for Lamma.

I know that Paul has friends PWY - and perhaps in YSW too - is quite a popular guy and will probably get staunch support from his circle. He's also well known at the vet's as he looks after stray dogs - which perhaps means his support will stretch into the animal welfare groups. The latter would normally include me, but I will vote for Damon if I think he has a better chance. I would find it hard to believe Paul mixes in the same circles as YLF.

If I could vote, I'd vote for Damon too. When there were a spate of dog poisonings, he showed up at the meetings and discussions about the issue -- that for me showed that he had concerns about animal welfare too.

Don't know who "embellished" the three banners near the pier, but it's pretty funny though. Would be even better if the messages were written in Chinese as YLF's club will probably brush it of as foreign troublemakers...

Saw Damon at the ferry pier this evening handing out leaflets, as he was last night too. Saw Paul Lau at the first shop from the ferry pier enjoying his beer not a leaflet in sight! I was also impressed with Damon on the night of the dog poisoning meeting as showed up and got involved in an issue that was troubling the heart of the community. Yu Lai Fan sat in the Fountainhead with her mates watching the comings and goings of the community, though i do believe she had a representative inside!
Damon will get my vote , I think he is just what Lamma needs right now!

I agree. Damon is the only candidate who understands the idea of campaigning for what he believes in, he listens to people and takes their views on board. Tthe other two are just relying on their personal connections.

Damon wrote several newsletters about Lamma, tackling the issues that Lamma is facing, so that even those who never had time to meet him in person can still get a pretty good idea of what he intends to do for Lamma.

If you missed his newsletters, he put them online

See http://onlamma.net/

We need a district councillor that can use both old and new media well, and responds to people's concerns. I wrote to Paul Lau and never got a reply!

I really can't believe YLF just sat outside when the meeting about the dog poisoning was going on. It really does astonish me that she felt her presence wasnt required even though the police had rolled out the big wigs to take part in the meeting. She is just a complete idiot.

She would be trying to avoid the issue. Speaking for a crackdown would offend some older villagers (her core constituency), who can't see what the fuss is about killing a few annoying dogs. But of course not doing so would offend the pet owners.

Actually, this is the kind of problem that village representatives should be solving. They should be able to work out just who is likely to be responsible and have a quiet word with them. But they seem to be more concerned with facilitating real estate deals than anything else.

A few posters with doodles on them is worth a news story? And a "criminal investigation" by the police?
Give me a break.

And no one used the word "Hitler"; yet it appears in the SCMP headline.
Adolf wasn't the only person to sport a moustache, maybe it was a reference to Chaplin.
Or Stalin. Or Basil Fawlty. Or just random uglification.

Don't mention the reclamation!

"Storm in a teacup" would be over-stating it.

But good that it gives her waterfront reclamation scheme some exposure.
"Clinic to the pier in 30 seconds".
Sure. 500 metres in 30 seconds; 60 Km/hr. That sounds really safe.
Obviously that's using the afterburners to get up to speed and bullbars to
get the pedestrians out of the way. Then they can wait 89 1/2 minutes for
the ferry instead of 88. Excellent use of $55 million.

How to get to the pier in 30 seconds -- or less!

otherwise:

GET OUT AND VOTE TODAY!!!

At least the article didn't mention hippies or expat drug syndicates

Is it possible to charge the police with wasting police time?

There was a surprising number of off-island police on Main Street today, policing the elections, it seems.

Maybe they were alerted by these scribblings to potential election trouble brewing in Yung Shue Wan and were called in by some overly cautious senior police??

Protecting the voting populace from flying bananas in Main Street, perhaps?
But the only placards seen in Main Street today so far all had candidate numbers on them, see Lamma-zine photo shoot which is already online on the home page.

I quite liked the hand-graffitied T-shirts by Paul Lau's team. If his own posters wouldn't have been defaced as well, he could have been a suspect in the major "crime investigations by the divisional support team in Cheung Chau already under way."

I didn't deem the scribblings worthy of a Lamma-zine story, but the SCMP reporter called me 3 times about it. He was even chasing up on photos I had taken of the scribblings just before the "District Council Officials" - I think they meant the "Fan Girls" Joyce & Ting-ting - tried to clean up the banners, not easy as it was waterproof marker.

I refused to give out the photos to the SCMP and didn't publish them myself either. Promoting childish vandalism doesn't help the fledgling grassroots democracy we see developing in HK ... very slowly, unruly, noisily, controversially, but moving into the right direction, I think. Talking to all the candidates and many of their supporters today, pre- and post-voting, was a really very pleasant, hopeful and encouraging way of spending a Sunday morning.

I'll be observing the vote counting tonight after 10:30pm. We should get the result shortly after midnight. It won't be a surprise to anybody, I'd guess.

Final, official figures, including the voting in the Sok Kwu Wan Clinic:

YU LAI FAN: 858
WONG CHUN PONG: 391
LAU PAUL: 92

The Islands District had the highest voter turnout rate of any district in HK at 42.09%.

Figures as expected I'd say. It was interesting to see that YLF's voters were all old generation local folk who not seemed to know any better. These will only diminish in future elections. Anyone managed to talk to Paul Lau and asked what exactly he wanted to prove by splitting the vote?

let's hope the votes to YLF were from the old ones, at least once they die there's still hope for HK to be a better place

>>> Meh, his rival Lex Luthur for president, is a better candidate. Let's split the vote for super villians. PS Luther wins.
