A question I get sometimes from Lammaites is if there is any chance of a Lamma - Lantau connection, by ferry, private ship or just a boat taxi on demand. Maybe only on weekends, to make it work financially. Maybe as a part of an Islands tour.

Anybody got any ideas about how this could proceed? We are part of the Outlying islands and although we have a different ferry company for the last years some of us hope that this can become a reality. The current inter-islands ferry included Lamma before, till HKKF took over the Lamma routes.

But who'd be interested in running such a connection? Is there any regular traffic between Lamma and Lantau that could guarantee a minimum income for the operator? Opinions and suggestions, please.

No, it never did, even when all the routes were run by HYF.

We've always (well for at least 20 years to my knowledge) been isolated from the other islands.

Sorry, I've been misinformed.

We've been isolated for that long? Is Lamma under quarantine from the other Outlying Islands? Are they afraid of being infected by our lifestyle or that the mythical, fabled "hippies" of yesteryear might invade their rural idylls?

There was a private lamma-lantau weekend service about 5 or more years ago, but it was rapidly abandoned due to lack of interest

We have have pondered this also. I'd have thought quite a few people would like to pop over to Lantau at the weekend, and vice-versa. Who runs the current inter-island service? perhaps they could be persuaded to include a run to Lamma. Mind you, best if The Truman Show isn't included.

I thought there was some rivalry with the triads of Lamma and the Triads of 'over there'.

If it's the one I vaguely remember, it was expensive, infrequent and not well publicised (probably because it was unlicensed). So not a real indication of how a scheduled service might fare.

It's run by <a href="http://www.nwff.com.hk/english/schedule/route.asp?Origin=PC&Dest=CC&From=25&line=H">First Ferry</a> who took all the other routes when HYF bowed out.

There was a big 10th Anniversary of the SAR event at Ngong Ping last night, organised by the Islands District Council.
Speeches, Buddhist prayers, Cantopop, fireworks.

The North Lamma Primary School sent a bunch of students to sing a song, and parents got an invite too.

They rented a ferry from HKKF that took us directly to Mui Wo. About 30 minutes to get there, about 20 to get back.

It's been over 10 years since I've been to Mui Wo... I'd go a bit more often if this ferry was scheduled.
