So I've had discussions with various people on Lamma and believe it is possible to petition for a couple of late night ferries. Starting with the weekend. Possible times suggested is:

2:30 am
4:00 am

Anyone willing to help on this?

Chris

That's a great idea! I personally would like to have a late ferry at 2:30am.

BBChris,

Yeah, great idea! Many people would love this! Even my wife would love to return later from Mah-Jongg in town.

But how to go about it? Collecting signatures or bombarding the ferry co. with e-mails and letters and calls? How to convince them that there's a genuine demand and enough travellers to make an extra service viable and profitable? :thumb-up:

Does anybody have experience with this kind of action?

Is to get the property developers on Lamma interested....!

Plus it's soon for elections on Lamma I believe, maybe talk to the prospective candidates about this problem.

Getting signatures together is good to submit to ferry company. Then getting press coverage from the newspapers would be good. I don't write Chinese characters so we would need somebody who was just as enthusiastic to help on this........

Any more suggestions?

I am able to help on the Chinese letter, but I think the SCMP would be more influential. Perhaps we can write to SCMP "letters to the editor" about our request? What do you think.

But we'd need to set up a desk and print out some letters etc. I have a draft of a letter written by Brett (who lives on Lamma) which I can forward to you guys.

Isn't any body else interested in helping?!?!?!

Goddess, why don't you post the letter onto the board, and then people who supports the petition could either email the letter to the authority or simply print it out to send by snail mail. Do you have the contact details of the authority, which I suppose should be the transportation department?

Er - contact details of authorities? No I haven't got that part done yet! Yikes!

I'll dig out the letter and post it in this section of the board.

Thanks!

i think that we should maybe try and start with one late ferry, say at 3 am, as a compromise. but i think the thing that we have to find out before the campaign goes full bore is whether hkkf is licensed to do a late boat, and what sort of redtape rigamarole they will have to go through to set it up for friday and saturday. because irrespective of how many drunk gweilos are interested in paying (and we should figure out how much we should suggest the late night boat should cost per passenger, before we go talk to them) if they are not allowed to sail the route by the coast guard or other maritime authorities, we are sunk before we started. just a thought....

Great suggestion! Where could we find out that sort of information?

On first thoughts, it would seem like it's not an issue as Cheung Chau has thru-the-night sailings?

Any news on this? Or maybe all people are get used to no late ferries already? :?

I'd also like to suggest a new route from YSW to CyberPort (those buildings in Pok Fu Lam) via Pak Kok Village. As far as I know there's already ferry service from CyberPort to North Point via Central (by New World First Ferry though).

Staff working at CyberPort can use this route for lunch at Lamma Island. While residents of Lamma can visit the CyberPort cinema for just 15 mins (estimated time). :P

no I work in Central but I just think it'll take the shortest time from Lamma to HK Island if the pier is on CyberPort.

This is one of the longest-running topics in these forums, the first message was posted almost 3 years ago. And we still have no late ferries, not even any reply or statement from HKKF, despite various people asking them in various ways.

But now there's a persistent rumour going around, spread not just by the usual suspects, the many gossippers and rumour-mongers, but also told by policemen and even Lammadonna herself. Most rumours I hear turn out to be BS, so I don't spread them, but this one seems to have legs, becoming more concrete over the last few weeks.

The ferry company seems to be considering a 3-month trial of late ferries, around 2am, checking how much demand there would be and if it could be commercially viable for them. It would not be just on weekends. No idea yet on starting date.

I'll try to find out more details myself, but if somebody knows more details already, please enlighten us! Is it true or just another false hope?

OK, details confirmed with Lammadonna this morning who's been in contact with HKKF directly:

2-month trial run of additional ferries from mid-Aug:
Ferries every day of the week from Central to YSW at 2:30am and 2 more ferries from YSW to Central at 12:30am and 5am!

An official announcement is expected within the next several weeks and some of the above details might change, so don't hold me to it. The approval from the Transport Dept. is still pending, but is not expected to be a problem.

After the 2-month trial run, it'll be decided if and how to continue the new ferry runs. I personally fear that the week-day late ferries at 2:30am might not have enough passengers, but we'll see and hope to be proven wrong.

Disaster if it is going to to be every day....it should only be on Friday and Saturday nights.

if it is everyday, there wont be any people on it and they will stop it saying it is not economical

I propose that instead of frequenting the pubs on Lamma or in town for the 2 month period we have 'ferry parties'. If someone brings along a stereo and everyone brings some booze we could take the 12.30 from Lamma and come back on the 2.30. We'll all be back in bed by 3.30 safe in the knowlege that the next night we'll be doing the same thing.
