|
Some breaking news from our correspondent on Main Street, Nick the Bookman:
David Slough fell off his flat's rooftop and was very badly injured tonight. Severe blood loss, but fortunately the ambulance moved him quickly to the Clinic.
Not sure how it happened exactly yet, but I saw the helicopter flying in to pick him up from the Power Station beach helipad this evening, shortly after sunset.
We'll keep his many friends & acquaintances posted, so if anybody has better and more up-to-date info, please let us know! _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

I have just heard that David has since died.
My friend who emailed this sad news to me told me that he had forgotten his keys and was trying to climb into his flat.
I saw David yesterday at about 4.00pm when he was walking down to the ferry on the bridge between the IFC and the ferry piers.
Terrible news. |

I am really shocked.
I know a few guys named David, but never bothered to ask their surname. Can you please tell me who was David Slough? A short description would be appreciated. |

Ditto from Chicago.
David is one of those guys who gives Lamma its special colo{u}r.
I'll pass the sad word on to all the ex-Lamma-ites that I meet up with here in the USA.
A strange and terrible twist.... _________________ I am a Professional DickStock Impersonator. |

Lamma expat killed in fall on to fence
PETER MICHAEL
A man who was impaled on a bamboo fence after falling from the roof of his three-storey home on Lamma has died, police said yesterday.
David Slough, a journalist with the Hong Kong police newspaper Offbeat, was admitted to hospital suffering from serious injuries to his left shoulder and right leg after the accident on Monday night, but was later certified dead.
"So far we have not released any official statement about his loss," said a police spokeswoman. "But we all feel very sad privately."
Rescue crews were called to Slough's home in Tai Wan Kau Tsuen early on Monday night, a fire service spokesman said yesterday. He was taken to North Lamma Clinic and later transferred by helicopter to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
A police spokeswoman said Slough had been found lying on the ground impaled on the fence. It is not known why he had been on the roof of the apartment block.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out in the next two days. |

Anybody who knew David is welcome to write a few lines remembering him or send a picture, for publication in the next Lamma-zine (Sep 25).
Please post here or email Lamma-Gung@Compunicate.com. Thank you!
My favorite picture of him, submitted by Sheila for my last Photo Contest, in the "Animals" category: "David and ferret":

This is not haiku
but written for Mr Slough
with deepest respect
We thought that even when we left
He would still remain;
Colonial Polonius
Of the Seats of Shame
We thought we’d always hear his voice
Sergeant Major clear
Holding forth on world events
Over discount beer
We thought maybe another day
We would listen more
And take the time to ask about
Hong Kong life before
That’s why it’s so unthinkable
The loss so hard to bear
That when we pass by Granny Chan’s
He’s no longer there |

Very nice indeed and a fitting epitaph.
Yes, very sad indeed.
I too knowing David quite well think it extremely unlikely that he might have been trying to climb up to his flat. Also he always went onto his roof immediately he got home to see his dogs and plants. However I have heard that it took the ambulance 20 mins to reach his house (because they couldn't find it - as usual) and they needed to borrow a mobile phone from a neighbour. It would also have been easy for a helicopter to land on the cable road above his house.
One must question why the ambulance service have this extraordinary problem of locating victims of accidents - don't they have proper maps? The postmen and Shell Gas seem to know where everybody lives and there is the excellent Centaline on-line map of HK which enables you to pinpoint every house on Lamma. After all he only lived 5 mins from the Fire/Ambulance depot.
Also why is every emergency case taken first to the Clinic - it's pointless because the doctor at that time would have left for the day and they presumably they don't carry emergency blood supplies there. (Why not?).
The other point is that patients who need airlifting must then go back in the ambulance to a helipad up on the cable road. Up until a couple of years ago they used to land on the playing field in front of the clinic. Why have they stopped doing this? (Rumour has it the the local headman Fung Loi objected to the noise because he lives directly behind the Clinic).
Our thoughts go out to Mui Ying, his wife. |

| Terribly sad indeed. David used to hang out with the x at the seats of shame and since his departure (the x that is) I have had very little time for David. I shall send my sympathies to Moi Ying and maybe have a word with myself at the same time. Life really is too short. |

| VJ on the evening in question when David was being carried around in the ambulance the story was that he locked himself out. He was also seen shortly before and reported to have been "quite chipper" as the person put it. I think we should just accept it was just a tradgic accident as there is no other explanation. |

| I am sure that Vince Loden (VJ) is only making the point that such a bizaare incident needs a full and thorough investigation. Because David has passed on we cannot avail ourselves of his testimony. However, as an employee of the Hong Kong Police we shall have to assume that they will look after their own and mount a highly professional inquiry into this tragic event. Also, there would be easier ways to commit suicide than impaling yourself on a bamboo fence from a great height. Foul play would be a different matter. |

The idea of him scaling the outside of his house is ludicrous. If the idea did possess him there are long ladders at the local temple which he would have known about. My guess is he was reaching for some litter or a toppled pot plant.

Actually, the only official helipad now is at the power station. See the thread a couple of months ago about the "new helipad". They want to blow $12 million to build a new reclamation just for a helipad, when there are acres of empty space on the existing one. (Or for that matter, the roof of the fire station, or any number of other places.) I suppose to justify this the first step was to rule out the football field which was used before. So I think that's the more likely motive. |

There's one more picture, adding to the helipad issue above.
I was sitting in the Deli Lamma's garden, having dinner with Lamma-Por. Always having my digicam with me, I took pictures of the gorgeous sunset.
Shortly afterwards, we saw a helicopter coming in and landing on the Power Station helipad. We've had to take the almost one-hour-total trip from the Clinic to QM Hospital by ambulance-helicopter-ambulance ourselves a few months ago, after which I got involved in the entire helipad issue.
A few minutes later the helicopter took off and I shot several pictures, just for future reference for another not-scheduled-yet Lamma-zine feature.
About half an hour later, Nick called my mobile, telling me about David's fall. Shocked, we realised who was on that helicopter...
According to the SCMP story, they brought him to Eastern hospital instead of the closest one, QMH? Photo taken at 6:57pm:
