Arriving home this evening on the 5:20 I came upon a commotion outside of the old Spicy Island Restaurant. Seems a human skeleton had been unearthed during excavations for the new sewer system. These remains had been lying undisturbed beneath Spicy's front door for an unknown period of time.
So, what's the story? The police whisked the bones away immediately without attempting to lift any prints at the scene. Was this the remains of some meddling environmentalist who stepped on the wrong toes? One too long overdue on their large bar tab? Or, perhaps the remains of an ancient virgin sacrificed to the mighty Typhoon God? Who can say?
A johnny on-the-spot archeologist judged the urn fragments to not be that old and mentioned that a skeleton unearthed around the corner some time previously had turned out to have only been about 60 years old. I showed this photo to a long time resident who recalled that long before Spicy Island, there had been a Chinese restaurant in this building (20 or 30 years ago she figured) There had been about 6 skeletons unearthed in, around,or beneath the building. Apparently customers frequently complained that the place had been infested with ghosts. People used to joke that even when nobody was sitting down to dinner the restaurant had a full house. _________________ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. ah, that's why the kids were so excited at the sight of a man digging a hole.
I am glad i didn't linger to see the object of their curiosity. |

there was a chinese restaurant there before Spicy.
I've sat right in that seat and had dinner many times.
I think it might be the Lamma Succubus unearted at last, no longer may it feed on the weak and febrile beer drinkers
No wonder Amar won so much on the races, he must have been in league with it |

The man who owns the 'Brothers' shop told me that there are most probably more skeletons under there. He said that when he was a child, he remembers being told that this is where lots of bodies were buried during the war by the Japanese.
I'm not sure if it's true, but I'm sure that the locals know the story of the skeleton. |

hmmmm - perhaps this spooky history could account for the accrimonious relations among the owners of this building that has eventually resulted in poor Amar's need to relocate? | My wife told me about a body that was dug up here back in Febuary, so this is not the first skeleton. |

There are stories about the war told here:
Kamikaze Cave
The "Hospital" on the way to Pak Kok
But when you look into them, there is no evidence at all. |

Uncle Russ? Is that the future tenant of this place?
I've only heard from the neighbours that it'll reopen as a cafeteria-type rest. soon, run by a Westerner. Anybody knows who and when? Maybe the future tenant might want to consider decorating to accommodate the guests & the ghosts as well, keeping them from causing trouble (both, guests & ghosts)?
Maybe Tony Chan is still doing consultations, for a small fee...of just a few hundred million dollars? _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

So far only a rumour - but I've heard it from multiple sources - that an Uncle Russ' Coffee shop will open there. _________________ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Just got this photo sent to me anonymously from a 3-connected camera phone, captioned: "Look want they found when digging outside spicy island !!"
The smouldering incense sticks are a nice touch... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

It`s mentioned that no artifacts were found with these bones & yet in the first post it states "A johnny on-the-spot archeologist judged the urn fragments to not be that old ", does anyone know for sure whether anything other than bones was unearthed?
I`ve several shards of pottery dating from the warring states period that were found in local building sites, not as unusual as you might think, & would like to hear from this "Johnny on the spot" if anything other than bones was in fact recovered. |

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think Ambrose Burnside has been seen for quite some time.... _________________ Adopt - Don't shop! |

I`m still interested in the fragments of the urn mentioned in the first post, ("A johnny on-the-spot archeologist judged the urn fragments to not be that old ") Any fragments found are most likely from a south Chinese Martaban jar & these can be difficult to date owing to the fact that they`ve been made the same way for centuries.
I`d also be interested in meeting any archaeologist on our fair island so if "Johnny on-the-spot" reads this thread please get in touch with me.
Below are shards from the warring states period & found on Lamma as well as a complete jar from that period., I don`t have a photo of a martaban jar which as I said above would be the most likely type of jar to be used in a burial until quite recently.
All the best. |

Any relation to the famous Dick Head? |

| the police notice has got the wrong address. Spicy's address is No.23 Main Street, not No.33! Maybe it doesn't really matter much.... |
