I've been reading about Lamma island on this site. It sounds fabulous. I've been to HK before but never to the island. My wife and I are Canadian English teachers in Korea presently. We have two young children. We're wondering what Lamma island is like for families. What kinds of schools, activities, etc are there? What's the environment in general like for families? What are the ups and downs? Any information would be great.
Thanks,
Ed. |

It's a pretty safe place for kids and much healthier in general than urban HK. Lots of room for them to play, including a beach, which if not scenic always has clean water (in the bacteriological, if not floating plastic, sense). There is a Catholic preschool and a govt primary school which have about half non-Chinese students.
Mosquitos are fierce. Look for a place with good air circulation and preferably insect screens. The latter are rare, the landlords just say close the windows and use AC all the time. I glued mesh over the windows and the outer door, bodgy but it works. A rooftop is nice, and higher gets fewer insects. There are lots of snakes, but I don't know of anyone being bitten by one. Too many dogs roaming around, some aggressive, all shitting everywhere. Worst wildlife problem is the large red centipede, which likes to crawl into your bedsheets and bite you on the foot (happened to me several times). Despite all that, one of the best places for kids in HK. |

But what Alan says is quite true. I don't think anyone who's simply scared of insects should consider Lamma. It's also one of the reasons why many people don't want to move here. On the other side of the lever is however a green environment, relatively low crime rate, a 'real' beach and reasonably priced shops allow you European lifestyle. For me the latter far outweigh the inconveniences. _________________ Ich arbeite als hund. |

I've just moved into my flat in Tai Peng Old Village. Just a few days ago when I was washing the staircase and the door, I saw a large red centipede escaping from the door frame. I drove it away with buckets of water.
The centipede looked really scary. I think this is what Alan talked about. Is the creature so common that it is easy to see one on your bed and get bites in the middle of the night? Is the bite harmful enough that one needs to rush to the emergency when bitten?
I also saw a large spider (4 inches in diametre, legs included) crawling out from the back of the refrigerator on the first day I took up the flat.
Although I think I can live together with all these animals peacefully, I truely advice those who are really afraid of spiders/centipedes/mosquitos and any other insects think and re-think thoroughly before moving to a "green environment" (e.g. Lamma). |

Thanks for all the helpful information. I really appreciate. Bugs and dogs aren't a big concern to us. But my wife is concerned about the power plant. What health concerns are associated with it on the island.? Has there been any kind of study done? It seems like a health-conscious island. Do the residents have concerns about it?
Thanks again. |

The emissions aren't a problem for us because the high chimneys mean the emissions come down somewhere else. The air here is much better than urban HK -- you often sail into a brown smog when you catch the ferry to Central. There are virtually no motor vehicles here. (A dozen or so small delivery trucks.) |

That was probably it. I and my wife have both been bitten several times over the last 10 years here. It is very painful, and you might come up in a lump later, but not deadly unless you happen to be especially allergic.
I got a copy of Hong Kong Animals (printed by the HK govt, probably still available) after meeting a few of the local animals. It lists all the snakes (including the Bamboo Pit Viper, which I once found in the kitchen). The centipedes are Scolopendra morsitans, the "Smaller forest centipede", up to 7 cm long, and the Scolopendra multidens, "Urban giant centipede", up to 13 cm, according to the book. However, I've seen ones over 30 cm long -- one memorable occasion I was in the shower and looked up to see it curled around the door frame. I rushed out and got a cleaver and chopped it. it was very reminiscent of the final scene in Alien when Ripley is in the escape pod. For all that the smaller ones are the most aggressive and likely to crawl into your bed. Bug killer works -- if I see one scurry under the furniture I use chemical warfare and they usually stagger out to die.
Here's an image (actually a Japanese species, but it looks pretty similar.)

i was advised that centipede bites are the worst in the evening time when they start to hunt and it will hurt less if u got bitten by them in the morning. bites are not lethal to adults, the bite will swell up and will go away in a few days. but bites can be lethal to small children and a rush to the clinic is advised. the lamma clinic is able to treat such bites any time. no worries. _________________ Learn more about the Lamma Animal Welfare Centre |

Thanks, Alan and e.
Alan, the photo you posted is really, really scary .(I hope no one will complain about it ) If I see one in the bathroom, the whole Lamma will hear my scream. May I know whether you live on the G/F? My flat is on the top floor of a two-storey house but the entrance is on G/F, just a yard away from the hill slope and bushes. This is the place I saw the centipede. My question is - since I am on the 2/F(though linked up by a flight of stairs from G/F), do I have a lesser chance to see these creatures on my bed?
For e, any advice on treating centipede bites DIY? It is no big deal to call the ambulance but it takes 20 minutes to walk from my place to the clinic. I don't think I can make it after a painful bite. |

| Pooh wrote: | | any advice on treating centipede bites DIY? | It hurts but I've never gone to the clinic. An anti-histamine cream might help. My wife is more sensitive to mozzie and other bug bites and comes up in lumps for a few days. I found this rather frightening web page A DICTIONARY OF PRACTICAL MATERIA MEDICA which is probably a worst-case scenario:
| Quote: | The effects of Centipede bites have been observed on several persons. Swelling, pain, inflammation, and gangrene of the bitten part, with appearance like malignant pustule in one case, were constant symptoms. Vomiting and pręcordial anxiety occurred, and in one fatal case the paroxysms of vomiting increased in intensity till the child in a convulsive struggle ceased to breathe. A symptom worth noting is "No perspiration of the right arm for three months."
| But I've been bitten a dozen times and no lasting effects other than a reflex to stamp on any centipedes I see. |

The scary centipede picture is too large and it makes the forum wider than the screen, so i make it smaller, not meant to undermine the ugliness of this monster! _________________ Ich arbeite als hund. |

centipede bites are known to be acidic. it would help to wash the wound with soda water or soap water. ice would help with the swelling. there are other old chinese folk methods like puttings smashed root of spring onion or smashed eggplant on the wound but i think these are also just to balance off the acidity of the bite and to kill pain. _________________ Learn more about the Lamma Animal Welfare Centre |

Thanks again, Alan and e.
Webdog has also done a good job by shrinking the photo of the centipede. By all means, it is less horrifying now. |

Wow, this is a great, helpful and most interesting discussion!
This is what we love about this website, people giving good advice and helping each other.
Reading all this bug talk makes me (almost) jealous about not having much experience myself yet, never having been bitten yet by any centipede, snake, spider or any other creepy crawly yet since moving to Lamma. I've only seen tiny geckos (I like those!) and occasional, but rare mosquitoes in our flat so far... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

e, I'm not using any mosquito repellents at all.
Just the standard solution of mosquito-netting on open windows that stay open almost 24 hours/day.
Following our landlady's example, we're just using very fine, cheap and almost transparent cloth glued to the window frames with standard white glue. It works and looks much better than the ugly, green standard plastic mosquito-netting and sticky tape that usually peels off in our humidity after a few weeks.
Also, we close all doors during dawn & dusk when mosquitoes are most aggressive, of course. We both hate mosquitoes, living on mosquito- and bug-free high floors of HK Island apartment buildings before. Fortunately, we haven't been stung for several weeks now... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

thanks lamma-gung for the tip.
i didn't mean to change to subject of this topic but whilst we are still discussing about insects and centipedes here, can anyone enlighten me about the very tiny grey or red centipede-like things that crawl around at this season? do they bite? _________________ Learn more about the Lamma Animal Welfare Centre |

I don't know about that, but my suggestion is to keep your doors and windows shield, at least those centipedes will be contained inside the infected flat. Got to care for your neighbours right? _________________ Ich arbeite als hund. |
