|
|
Hello to all from far away, cold, wet Vancouver
I couldn't help but notice Lamma-Gung's request in the Lamma-zine forum thread, looking for Sponsors and Advertisers.
As an administrator and web master for multiple systems myself, for both commercial and private use, I can certainly attest to the dedication, focus and financial commitment required to maintain a web site like Lamma.com and its Forum system.
Believe me, it is anything but trivial work, and it requires a serious effort on the part of Lamma-Gung and his 'volunteers' (Forum moderators). I cannot understate this ... you have to experience it to fully appreciate the significant effort.
For this reason I am issuing a challenge to everyone who gains enjoyment and education from L-G's Lamma.com efforts. I challenge those who can afford it to send in at least a FIVE-YEAR sponsorship ... not a nebulous promise of future support, but cold hard cash up front. Putting my money where my mouth is, I have made such a commitment to L-G. All those wannabe Lammaites (like me) and ex-Lammaites who still visit Lamma.com are especially encouraged to contribute from offshore. It's only US$5 per month, but I'm sure that any reasonable amount would be welcomed.
Let's give as much assistance and encouragement as we can to promote and support this web site. It is well managed, reliable and open-minded, which is more than can be said for a lot of other sites I have visited from time to time.
I DARE YOU TO MEET OR EXCEED MY OWN 5-YEAR COMMITMENT
With kindest regards to all,
ChuckM, Vancouver BC _________________ Lead me not into temptation;

Well, please don't take this as being smug, but I do think this site is good value for my donation so I went for the suggested amount in L-G's original request. I'm not a wealthy bloke (far from it!), but contributing once for a 5-year term means one less thing to remember each year. I guess you could call me lazy or forgetful ... it goes with the gray hair
It amounts to less than the cost of a couple of Starbucks coffees per month, and I already consume far too much caffeine as it is. _________________ Lead me not into temptation;

Good for you! I'm just worried about L-G becoming a 'fat, ugly old' but ultimately un-happy dot com billionaire with your initiative Maybe we should have a re-new your Lamma sub on L-G's birthday each year? Or, are you just hedging against inflation? |

Hmmm ... I never thought of that one! Perhaps I should have made it 10 years  _________________ Lead me not into temptation;

I missed my chance to become a dotcom millionaire, even though I certainly tried, 7 years ago and that's that. If I'd have succeeded back then I might never have moved to Lamma and this website would have died long ago, I think, as few people could make the daily time commitment to keep a site of this size alive and going.
I've just received chuckm's bank transfer/birthday present, $2,2xx, and as I expected he remains the ONLY one being that generous, nobody taking up his challenge so far. I'm still amazed and surprised that a non-Lammaite would be so supportive of a site so focused on Lamma only. Let's make chuckm an honourary Lammaite, a very rare honour we've only awarded 1-2 times in the history of this site. I dub thee Sir Chuck the Honourary Lammaite! You will be addressed with this very rare and honourable title from now on on this website!
I've finally met Mr Chan, our 2nd District Councilor/Chairman of the Rural Committee/Village Representative, before the around-Lamma cruise last Saturday and he wants me to help promote Lamma to attract even more local visitors. I can check with him about any official formalities, if any, to make somebody an honourary Lammaite... Just kidding, no formalities needed!
But there were one handful of 1-year site sponsors who pledged before Sir Chuck's appeal but prefer all to remain anonymous - and I'm very grateful to them as well. Their great donations will just about cover the basic yearly hosting, domain name and extra hard disk costs of these two interlinked sites.
So what to do with Sir Chuck's most generous donation? No problem if he'd like to top up his donation to 10 years, I'll gladly absorb the future inflation!
As my doctors don't like me to drink too much, I'll have to find a better use for the cash burning a hole into my account. My account is not used to such big sums of money and it might collapse from overload if I don't use some of the money soon.
How about giving some of Sir Chuck's cash back to the very people who make all these forums possible, the moderators? A really nice big banquet, pre-Chinese New Year like a traditional local company party, for all moderators might be a good idea!? I haven't done that in quite some time.
Us senior moderators could welcome all the recent new and currently active moderator volunteers:
Jane Ram, nicole_kam, Yogesh, Leggova, Rach (soon-to-replace Superblue who's just emigrating)
Without all these wonderful people and all the senior moderators the forums couldn't be running so well. Thanking them all with a free dinner is the least I can offer them! _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

I would love to come for a dinner, but not a free one. I want to pay my way.

I think the dinner is a great idea ... helps to keep up the momentum.
Too bad I can't be there to meet all of you in person! Enjoy!!!  _________________ Lead me not into temptation;
