|
|
I just get back home... and saw a super huge gecko in my kitchen ! Its body like 10cm long, and with the tail double. At 1st I was thinking there is 2 gecko sticking together.. I never see any as big as this one... It runs super fast and looks really strong. I'm not dare to touch it.. or to catch it. I just closed the door and let it be inside...
What I can do? I'm totally freak out. |

*shudder*
i loathe geckos. when i lived in PNG for two years in the 90s i became phobic about them. they just disgust me to the core of my being.
snakes and other little lizards, no prob. actually i love little skinks, blue tongues and other such that we have in australia. but geckos.. those loathsome, stinky, semi-transparent creatures.. makes me feel sick thinking about them
i forgot about HK being a place where geckos are likely to live. tropical country, of course. stupid me.
I don't want to come to HK anymore ! |

| I've found that if I replace the word gecko with other words (e.g. politicians) in this last post, it will still sound that same. |

They're harmless, except they leave little (or in this case, large) white droppings like budgerigars.
I think a big one won't be happy inside a house and will leave given the opportunity.
l've got a few in my house, ranging from tiny 5 mm to 3-4 cm. |

Actually, not only they are not harmless, they eat mosquitos! (or so I heard)
When I was living in town, I hated geckos....as much as I hated cockrouches, bees, dragonflies and very much anything that don't look like human.
Pay attention to it, look it close-up if it doesn't dash away --- you'll see its beauty. Hands down, it's always much more welcome at home than say, the infamous centerpedes or the widowers. |

| allow me my innocent, spontaneous, irrational phobias. i love nature and can sit for hours looking at a bug on a leaf and the shape of clouds etc ad nauseum dreamily meditating on the cosmic awesomeness of it all, watching aeons of time rise and fall before my mind's eyes as the great remorseless miracle of evolution plays out against the speeding sweep of glaciers and the rise and fall of mountain ranges. but geckos are still revolting. no doubt there's an evolutionary reason for such phobias too. not that i'm deterministic about the relationship between evolution and psychology |

| I often find one in the kitchen sink. Perhaps it was getting a drink, or eating a food scrap, but once in it's too steep and slippery for it to get out. Then I just pick it up and drop it out the window. Use a cloth or gloves if you're squeamish. |

Oh.. this one is just too big and I just freak out... I do not want to deal with it.. I just closed the door and leave it inside.. I have no idea how it gets out (or actually in too), I did look close to it because at the beginning I wonder if there is 2.... but no, it's only one, it's semi-transparent and I see a black thing in his body, i don't know what it just ate... oh my god... it's too big. I'm too shy to go to the neigbour, actually I don't know them..
I can handle the small one... but this one.. what the hell is that? |

| I think Moley has the answer - get to know them a bit and the horror dsappears, especially when you realise they are quite harmless. They are really quite fascinating little (yes 10 cm is hardly a grizzly bear) creatures. I also lived in PNG and found the geckos on the walls one of the pleasures of living there as they scurried around eating stray insects and clucking as they chased one another round the ceilings. |

I think you'd better get used to geckos if you want to live on Lamma.
At first i too wasn't too pleased to sleep in a room with geckos,, especially the big ones, but i learned to ignore them. They eat insects and therefore i am happy to share my flat with them. The only minor problem is that they shit on walls and other surfaces, and i have to clean up after them!
Geckos are very shy and like darkness, you will seldom see them during the day. If you want to avoid seeing them when you come home at night, turn on the light and allow a few seconds before stepping into the room. By then they are already hiding. |

| If you do not like it, just use a toy type water spray gun and drive it away. It does not hurt the gecko nor damage any furniture. |

| Lucky you! I've never seen a Gecko on Lamma larger than my hand. Are you sure its a Gecko? Eitherway as said above, I also like them. They dont bite, they eat things that do bite, they have a very cute face (for a reptile) and they keep out of your way. I think I currently have around 4-5 geckos in our home, and almost no mozzies. I hope that goes someway in repaying our appaling carbon footprint by not using 'Gecko-b-Gone' CFC spray. |

Be sure to fasten your cereal packets tightly. A couple of times I have heard terrified screams from my dining room and rushed in to find my kids got my than they bargained for when they poured their rice crispies into their bowls!
Most of the time however we love our gecks. |

Thanks for everyone's advice, including the useful "pack my bags" idea.
At the beginning I move here I do scared by everything, now I get used to it and I can stay peace with those small ones... but the size of this one is really too big and I just can't go through it.
Believe it or not.. I just let this big one occupied my kitchen, I haven't open the door since then. Maybe they're now having a party inside. I just hope soon he will leave and go somewhere nicer.
I believe it's a gecko.. it just look exactly the same as the small one, but bigger. |
