I just got an email that Lobert (or is it Robert?), the ancient dog of the Man Fung Rest., has just died? Is it true?
Anybody passing by the Man Fung Rest. on the way to or from the ferry regularly has seen him and he must have been one of the best-known, most popular, gentle dogs in the village.
Two photos from Karin below. Do you have more photos? During cooler weather the Man Fung people used to dress him in some funny overcoats.
I’m thinking about a little Lamma-zine "eulogy" as so many people have known him for what must have been much more than ten dog years. Who might be interested in writing the "eulogy" or has some little stories about Lobert? _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day

I miss Lobert.... I still remember when i first stepped on the Lamma, I saw this short legs dog with funny face. He was really funny and cute...I always called his name when I passed by and he would wagged his tail. He was nice and already the icon of Man Fung..... I miss him much _________________ work hard, play hard, enjoy life ^v^ |

Sad news indeed. Still he had a good innings. Now the Man Fung will need a new mascot and clearer of scraps. _________________ Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears. |

"O" Robert "O"Robert
The dog who wore a coat to beat the winter chills.
Who's waging tale and saging smile will sadly be missed by all.
You were one of the most well known and loved dogs on the Lamma rout.
A little slow of late maybe just dreaming of younger days when you would run with the pack and rule the dog world of YSW.
Always ready and keen to take a snack from any one who would care to offer you one and been the wise dog you were you hung around the Island Bar where you would be sure of a pack of nuts or crisps given buy the bar punters.
I think that who ever made the choice for you to go must have looked down and saw what a welcome addition you would be to the place where one day some of us will meet you once more and perhaps you will offer us a paw.
Rest in peace little Robert. |

Very sad news indeed.
He is usually the first one I say hello to coming back to Lamma everyday.
But then he did left some short legged genes around did he?

Lobert was one of the more interesting characters around the Island Bar - he will be sorely missed. RIP Lobert. I expect there will be rich pickings wherever you have gone. _________________ “We can confirm that the ferry has sunk." |

A bit more info from Karin, confirming Lobert's demise:
Lobert couldn't walk or eat for several days. So they finally sent him for an injection to put him to sleep...
...and one more picture, outside one of his favourite haunts, The Island Bar.
Does anybody have a shot of Lobert in cool-weather attire? _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

Oh... The passing of another great and much loved Lamma icon. Very sad news indeed.
Robert hadn't looked well during the past week, so I figured it was about time. But the last time I saw Robert, a couple of nights ago, he was crippling towards a fellow Lammaite who had just called out to him. Though Robert seemed restricted in movement, he was certainly wagging his tail and looked very happy.
So, farewell, old friend. You'll be sorely missed. Ain't no other dawg's gonna replace yer, Robert! Rest in peace. |

Does anybody have got more photos of Robert?
They might be published in a Lamma-zine story, to be written by our famous Lamma Author and newly appointed "Official Court Pet Correspondent", Mr Jay Scott Kanes.
In fact, the appointment is so new that even he doesn't know about it yet... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day

Slow dog coming
Waddling by the Island Bar, a grave Lotze dog
Minding own dog business having made dog peace with the Way
Dreaming of Mutt Heaven
In the language of the pooch canine.
Let the other dogs howl madly at scraps of Moon
As if the Moon were but newly created, smashed off Earth
Or conduct dog conversations late at night in Wang Long
About whatever it is concerns dogs:
You were the best of all possible dogs
In this best of all possible worlds. _________________ Publish and be damn'd |

I've just heard from the Island Bar that Lobert will get his own plaque in there. This is an honour that few people have ever achieved, not even dead local celebrities like Pinky, David Slough or Jonathan Gray...
By the way, to get an Island Bar plaque you have to ring the bell, pay a round of drinks for everybody present and pay $150 for the plaque-making which takes a few weeks. Anything can be honoured, people, birthdays, parties, even the upcoming 5th anniversary of this website and the Lamma-zine, for example. _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

Two points about Robert.
1. He had a face of character, the sort of face I thought belonged in a book of Yousuf Karsh portraits.
2. He handled his territory well. He seemed to put up with the dogs in the restaurant and bar as long as they were with their owners. But one day just about a month ago, I noticed an ownerless dog sniffing around the tables. Robert got up and gave him a look, a warning. The dog noted his presence but continued sniffing around for scraps. Moving quite impressively for his age and stubby legs, Robert sprinted over with a low character growl and nipped the intruder in the rear, sending him on his way with a yelp. |

The Lobert story and pictures are online now on the home page.
The plaque in the Island Bar will read:

After my biweekly email sent out yesterday to remind people of what's new in the daily Lamma-zine, I got a few more pictures of Lobert. Ex-Lammaite Vernon called him "Lamma's most photographed dog."
| Stine Baska, next month's Artist of the Month wrote: | Hi, here is a photo we took on assignment during a recent home-schooling journalism activity:
9/1/2007 - Interview with Lobert about the Po Wah Yuen Hill:
What is your name?
Lobert
Where do you live?
On the path on front of Mah Fung restaurant
What do you think of the Po Wah Yuen Hill?
Which hill?

We were looking for a photo of Lobert, R.I.P., in one of his cool-weather coats, but nobody has submitted any so far.
I just found one on the brand-new hiphongkong.com website. Lobert really looks like a very distinguished old but hip gentleman: _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |
