They're quite worried about how much higher this 4th chimney of the Power Station will rise. It's just been capped off with a huge, mushroom-like "hat". You can see it well from the arriving/departing ferry and from some of our hills, but not from anywhere around Yung Shue Wan or even the ferry pier

Well, you can see it quite clearly from the beaches. I don't know why anyone (except a helicopter pilot) should be concerned about how high it is. There are already three huge chimneys. And the higher they are, the further away the pollution goes.

Well, a lot of people seem to be worried about seeing a 4th chimney from their flats, so I got more worried emails on this topic than on any other of HK Electric's on-going projects.

It looks like the 4th chimney has been carefully positioned to remain invisible from Yung Shue Wan and the ferry pier, with HK Electric especially highlighting these facts. They have a long memory and remember well the past big opposition when the 3rd chimney was erected. Out of sight, out of mind...

At least, this new chimney will be for the much lower and less dangerous emissions from gas burning. In the next few years 1-2 of the first three chimneys will be mostly switched over from coal to gas as well.

It's all part of the huge HK$12 billion capital projects investments they've just been approved to make from 2004-2008. We'll all have to pay for this in yearly electricity charge increases over the next 3 years at least.
See press release:
HK Electric’s 2004-2008 Financial Plan Approved (22 July 2005)

Did they say why? Bad feng shui, "unlucky 4" syndrome, or something rational?

We went to visit some friends in Tung Chung recently. I noticed their development had Blocks #1, #2, #3, #5, #6. Maybe HEC could say this is Chimney #5 then no one would be worried.

An ex-Lammaite Chinese blogger has just alerted me to the fun fact that the 4th chimney might actually be lucky:

"To break the bad 'three incense sticks' fung shui, Hongkong Electric Company decided to erect a fourth chimney on Lamma Island."

I've heard that one before, the current three chimneys are considered very unlucky for this reason, especially together with all the graves up on the hills.

Anybody got more comments about the Fung Shui aspects of the Power Station, the extension and maybe the wind turbine as well?

How about, "It's superstitious rubbish"?

Well, you're entitled to your own opinion - like everyone else - and I might even agree with you, but the VAST MAJORITY of local residents - including Lamma-Por - will not agree. I'd love to hear from them and they're most welcome to voice their opinions, without getting any ridicule and condescension from me.

For example the progress report of the Power Station extension talks very frequently about chimneys, new buildings and many constructions being "erected" and many "erections" happening over there.

Could all these erections have a very positive impact on the fertility Fung Shui of Lamma Island? Looking around on Main Street these days, the nickname "Fertility Island" is definitely most accurate!

Vast majority? No one I know takes it seriously (or could explain the principles behind it). Hardly anyone pays more than lip service to it.

In my experience, feng shui serves an excuse for people to do what they planned to for other reasons (like Tung and Government House), or to ask for compensation for imaginary damages (a common tactic in New Territory developments), where it provides a cover for bribery or extortion.
