I didn't realize Guy is blind - there must be a truly amazing technical story behind it... |

Sorry to disappoint AB, but blind luck is closer to the mark.

I'm very interested in the microscopic flora and fauna that infest the hardened outer crust of the sun baked lamma dogs egg.
Do you think you could possibly take a few nice macro shots for me Guy?
Thanks in advance _________________ don't talking to me |

Guy, I just gotta ask ... how do you capture these amazing shots? Do you set the camera up and sit back with a remote control just
outside the "stinger danger zone"? The image quality is perfect for web presentation.
Looks like you are able to use a fairly fast shutter speed, and I assume it's a digicam with a macro setting.
Oh damn, I forgot, it's probably a new i-Bamboozler (all the rage on Lamma, so I hear) so it just sits there by itself, watching
for just the right moment ... and then .................. Wham! .
I don't know about L-G and all the other contributors, but I'm beginning to suffer from "shutter envy"  _________________ Lead me not into temptation;

Chuck!
Now you've done it and blown Guy's deep dark secret!
Yes, Guy is the proud owner of the latest model of the "Bontempi Gigapix Fandango i-Bamboozler", the Mach-99Xtra model.
It's absolutely fully automatic, just sitting there all night on his rooftop and when its on-board Artificial Intelligence infrared-sensor movement-detector pattern-recognises anything interesting flying around, it zooms in, sets all the camera's picture-taking parameters fully automatically, takes multiple shots and then its BSS (Best Shot Selector) chooses the best one and automatically uploads it by Gigabit Wi-fi wireles network connection directly to Guy's website.
He gets up very late in the morning, all well-rested, and has a look at the latest photos uploaded to his website. All he has to do himself is to choose his own favourite pictures of the night and hyperlink them from these forums. That's the ONLY thing he has to do manually, but the next model of the i-Bamboozler might likely add this hyperlinking feature as well...
You see, taking these shots is so much easier than most people think! Why should us traditional, manual photographers get shutter envy? As long as Guy doesn't start competing for my paid photo shoots with some of my clients, I don't mind but even appreciate his fantastic wildlife shots very much.
Anyway, his wildlife pictures are far beyond in quality from any other photographer living on Lamma Island, hopeless to try competing, we'veall given up already. Maybe with the sole exception of the Official Court Artist's fantastic insect shots, but he's only a temporary, occasional Lamma resident... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

Thanks the praise L-B & for getting me out of a tight spot.
(Knows it's only coz yr looking for my old Bontempi when I upgrade)
Besides, thought I was going to have to make up some cock & bull story
about sitting for endless hours with my Nikon D70 & 60mm macro lens
4-8" away from a bunch of rabid hornets continuously getting tangled in my
hair & landing on my face & arms as I either blow on them from a distance
of about 4" or knock them off their resting position with a 6" twig whenever
they settle to get a bit of movement out of them & all without remote control
coz D70 doesn't have one except some stupid thing that works from in
front of the camera (if I had one).
Now all I have to do is try & work out how to stop them getting the lens on
my Bontempi so dirty when I'm not around.
But Chuck, or anybody else, not trying to intimidate anybody, just trying to
get better pics. I started by posting some pretty bad ones, & now with these
Bontempi's around, anybody can take reasonable to good pics with a little
patience & thought.
So....., anybody got any pics? (if that isn't a troll invite, I don't know what is) _________________ My inability to tolerate your ambiguity is compounding my neurosis

Gawd! The things some people will do for science! . I wish I could afford a D70, or even a D50! . 1,600 Canadian bingo-bucks (D70s with lens) is just a bit too steep (well, a lot too steep actually) for this photo-challenged soul. I think I might be able to afford the rotting bananas though.
I'd love to go to the effort of automating it just for the pure technical fun, spending endless hours getting it to sense a close-up insect and snapping a shot. The software and hardware challenge is so sweet! Years of experimenting, hundreds of stings and thousands of false starts might produce at least one useable shot that approaches Uncle Guy's polished performance.
*sigh* .  _________________ Lead me not into temptation;

I'm curious ... what kind of shutter speed is needed to capture these shots? Despite the bluish blur in the latest picture, I tend to think it must be fast, since many insect wings beat at audio frequencies. _________________ Lead me not into temptation;

Shutter speed on all of them was at 500, the blur is coz the wings were
beating really fast in some pictures whereas in others it was closer to a glide flight

And this is where some of them live...
Interesting (for me at least) to see what I assume is the various growth stages
shown in the development in the eyes - ranging through, pale yellow, grey, to brown.
Poor chap (bottom centre left) looks as if he's gone cross-eyed looking at the camera.
(apologies for quality but there might have been a bit of camera shake)

Mr. Bean..., just for you - I'm working on the next photo as you read.
Thought of putting this in the Dragonfly forum, but didn't seem right.
The dragonfly was caught in mid-flight & pulled to the ground, decapitated &
had it's wings pulled off - then a portion of it's innards removed, before the
hornet flew off with it's prize - apologies to dragon lovers
