Did you get a shot of the back? It's rather hard to tell from the underneath. Not that I can recognise butterfiles, but there is a site at

http://hkls.org/Featured_butterflies/Featured_butterflies.htm

with some pictures of HK butterflies

.

Thank you!
Unusually, it was impossible for me to get far enough away from the butterfly to photograph the upperside. All my attempts are out of focus.

Congratulations, Sheila,

You've just made it into "Photo of the Day" in the new Lamma News Blog, for your rare photo!

Have a look at the Sep 21 entry at Lamma.com.hk

This is a nice site:

http://www.greenpower.org.hk/new/butterfly/e_4_03_frame.html

At least it has some very informative content - I find the design rather annoying.

Your picture looks like the one named Plum Judy of the Metalmark group.

Got this one the other day - Transparent Six-lined Blue - sort of like "Beauty & the Beast"

Nice picture. Maybe this could stimulate a few of us to try our hand at getting a good butterfly shot.

The butterfly/moth came back and I got a photo of the upperside. It has been on my shoulder for quite a while now.

OK, Zep, here's one more butterfly for your collection.
Large and pretty common, shot in my neighbour's flower garden.

One more thing I love about living on Lamma: no need to walk too far to find great nature subjects to photograph...

These were both higher resolution photos than these reduced versions ... but i think they still look good.

I guess this is a Common Mormon but without the red dots. Does that indicate a male?

I think this is a Silver Streak Blue. It's a great name, especially as it doesn't look at all blue from this angle. it is Blue on the upperside. This is apparently an uncommon butterfly.

Very nice pictures.
There are numerous similar, but different species of brown butterflies - this one has an irridescent blue on the topside of it's wings - but this is the nearest I got to being able to photograph the "blue side"

Nice pictures! I've tried to get a butterfly shot but can't get the creatures to sit still long enough. I'l try again this weekend.

Since we don't seem to have any real butterfly experts around, maybe we should introduce a new rrequirement - identify the butterfly you photograph from available resources on the Internet.

I also have difficulties taking pictures of butterflies, but have found that if they settle you can actually get quite close to them to take the photo. But keep yr movements slow.
If they fly away, hang in there, there is a very good chance they will return to the same spot.
Best time seems to be early morning, as they appear a little sleepy & like to sun themselves to warm up their wings.
Another example today, although I will try & dig up it's name later

Beautiful - it is also valuable to see what plants they are on or interested in.

I think this may be a Red Helen. This one never fully settled, the wings always busy.
