|
|
Wonder if anybody knows Chow Yun Fat, one of the most famous Hong Kong movie star and starred in the hugely successful Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was born on Lamma? LA Times Magazine has made an interview with him several years back.
| Quote: | Chow has come to the pier today to catch a ferry and show me Lamma Island, where he grew up. A few years ago, Lamma was home to hippies from the West. Today, if there are slackers anywhere in Hong Kong, they live, locals are convinced, on Lamma. When the boat docks, one of the first people we see is Chow's elderly mother, at a table with three friends, slapping down purple-and-white ivory mah-jongg tiles. "Her doctor says mah-jongg is what keeps her alive," Chow beams.
Round tables line the shore. Behind them are banks of aquariums, full of groupers and cuttlefish, shrimp and abalone and geoduck. These seafood restaurants won't come to life until the wave of tourists arrives over the weekend. Walking down a trail--cars are barred on the island--Chow scans the line of shops and mutters, "It's become so commercialized." As he says this, we pass beneath rows of blue and yellow pennants, each picturing him in a white dinner jacket, black hair impeccably slicked back, advertising "God of Gamblers Returns." ..... |

I think that EVERYBODY on Lamma knows that our beloved Chow Yun Fat grew up here and even knows in which house! The most famous ex-Lammarite, now living in Sai Kung. Anybody who didn't know it, even among the non-Chinese population, care to admit it?
It's amazing that there's no note or sign for tourists to let them know!
Any update on what "Fat-Tsai" is up to these days? _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

I had a chat a few years ago with a lovely old lady on Lamma, (next to Nick Lovatt's bookstand in fact). I was standing with Jill (bass player from Sisters of Sharon) and translating the Cantonese for Jill.
The old lady was telling me all about her son who'd gone to improve his English in America, so I asked what her son did, she said acting and I said "Oh really? Would I know him?", she said he's called "Chow Yun Fat" - I laughed and said I've heard of him......
She walked away and I laughed and told Nick who she was. Then I pleasantly watched Nick for the next ten minutes telling everyone that he'd met Chow Yun Fat's Mum when in fact he'd paid no attention to the conversation....
Now is that old memory gossip or trivia movie chat?!?!?!?! _________________ Hong Kong Underground Music Scene:

|
|
I've clipped an interview with Chow Yun Fat in City Life, June 2002 issue, a tourist publication.
Quoting the two Lamma-relevant parts:
- Q: What is your most special memory of Hong Kong?
A: My childhood, growing up on Lamma Island.
- Q: If you had to recommend just one place to see in Hong Kong,
what would it be?
A: My birthplace, Lamma Island. The interview also mentions that he's currently filming his latest movie, "The Bulletproof Monk", in North America. That would make quite a change from all his gangster/killer roles... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

I have to admit my ignorance. When I was younger (and wiser), I knew that Chow was brought up on an island, but I thought that was Cheung Chau then. Until very very late.
Can somebody enlighten me where his house is, so that I can go there to worship him? |

Chow Yun Fat has a younger brother?!!!!!
I thought it was just a plot in A BETTER TOMMOROW II. You mean there is a real Ken Gor! Why nobdy ever told me before of this secret.
[Webdog remark: Mark is the name of Chow in A BETTER TOMORROW, and Ken is his twin brother in the second episode because Mark was killed in the first!] |

I have to admit I don't live on Lamma!!!! Or I'm as good as blind, since you make it sound like Chow's younger brother is everywhere in the village, and no sane person could ever miss it! |

When you walked past Chow Yun Fat, did he notice you and then shouted:
"Oh, aren't you the very famous BBCHRIS of Thinking Out Loud, formerly one of the Sisters of Sharon???
Oh, I'm so excited, it's really BBCHRIS !!!!!
Can I have your autograph, PLEASE?!!!"
This must happen to you all the time anyway... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

bbchris,
your message was posted at 2:05am, Ms. LOUD.
Just four laters later you're already getting a LOUD reply to your message, trying to wake up Ms. LOUD at 6am (beautiful sunrise over Lamma right now!) with my very LOUD message!
I can't be Thinking Out LOUD, as I'm still sleepy, trying to finish this week's LOUD "My Lamma e-zine".
But it's so LOUD here in YSW at 6am!!!
Dogs barking, birdie-poos twirping & greeting the sun, wind rustling leaves, PC fan humming, my keyboard clacketing, my head spinning... Sooooo LOUD!!!
Could it be a hangover? Better go back to bed... _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

Hey, no more "loud" diversions!
Let's get back to the topic of this forum: Chow Yun Fat & Lamma!
So it's possible to meet his brother as well as his mother here?
Any more of his family living on Lamma? _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

Yes, I missed the chance again!
Somebody should announce such opportunities in advance!
It was a busy grave-sweeping day in several graveyards:
my wife's parents and former in-laws, plus Dim Sum and delicious Chinese dinner.
I prefer Ching Ming personally, as you have a full month to visit the graves, not all in a rush hour single day like Chung Yeung!
The resident ghosts in the graveyards must be getting really frightened by the hordes of picknickers... |
