It's a bit of a mystery. Quoting Avifauna of HK: " While migrant cattle egrets undoubtedly pass through Hong Kong, the proportion of birds that are winter visitors, summer breeding visitors or residents respectively is unknown."

This maybe the ugliest breeding plumage photo of the Cattle Egret ...

There are 4 of them arrived Yung Shue Long about a week ago. This is the third spring seeing them passing by. I am actually expecting them. I believe they are the same group in every spring and autumn.

A bit scruffy maybe, but I suppose cattle egrets have feelings too and we wouldn't want to hurt his self-esteem. Nice to see them around on Lamma, anyway. I sometimes see them flying over Tai Peng in the very early morning.

I am with you Zep! I think the red highlights are nice. Better than a plain old white and well-groomed cattle egret.

Wow, Harry! Several Wildlife Photos of the Day in a single post from you, as most of these photos are amazing!
My favourite: the Francolin in mid-song!

Nice shots - especially that middle one of the francolin. They are quite common and you can hear them all the time, but it's very hard to get a picture.

Francolin is very good considering how difficult it is to get a clean shot.

Hair-crested Drongo........

Great pics. The other day I saw a couple of drongos giving a crow a really hard time, dive-bombing very close. I have yet to see a francolin closer than about 50 metres away - they're very shy. I imagine that francolins would make good eating - perhaps the greater coucals too for that matter. I imagine if this was China, there'd be rather fewer of these birds about...thanks be...

The thunderstorm in the early hours of this morning must have challenged even the most waterproof of hiding places for the birds. When the rain eventually stopped this morning, this black-eared kite and greater coucal both felt the need to hang themselves out to dry.

Nice shots Harry. Good to see the cattle egrets around. I like the back-lit shot at the beginning.

As summer rolls in, the number of interesting species is declining, so back to some old faithfuls. Here a demanding, hungry, black-collared starling youngster is giving its long-suffering parent some verbal.

Wow, that's a most impressive list!

OK, birdos, now we just need a picture of EVERY bird on this list, plus a recording of their typical sound(s), if possible!

That would make a nice permanent addition to this website, don't you agree? A little fun project for the Community of Birdos on Lamma Island: COBLI!

Guy, thanks for your supplement.

L-G, pictures of birds in my list should be found somewhere in this thread or another "Rarely seen birds in Lamma". "Sound" will be funny but it is a harsh task anyway. For those who really want to start bird watching, the first homework is to flip over all 42 pages of this thread and it is already a very good chronicle record of birds to be seen in Lamma.

Harry, I'm so impressed with the quality of your photos ... right up there with Guy! You, Guy, Zep and other contributors should think about collaborating on a book about the birds of Lamma. No kidding.

L-G ... perhaps a contest for the most intriguing title for the book?

Just twisting a few arms, Hehe! Wink

chuckm, Lamma's bird watchers are usually solitary creatures and rarely flock together for any reason anywhere, except in these forums. I haven't met or even seen Zep and Guy in many months, never met HarryLi and as far as I know they all very rarely meet each other.

A book sounds like a doomed and impossible proposition, unfortunately. Much better chance of success if one of them does it by himself, like Guy's Lamma Wildlfife 2007 calendar which you can now even spot being used in some restaurants on HK Island.
