I like it! Short and sweet, very clever and literary-minded with its mix of French and Spanish, kind of sophisticated, but with a very cynical edge (literally).

A rotating guillotine! The French revolution would have loved it, especially as the guillotine was initially invented to make their mass killings faster and more efficient. Let's hope this won't happen to our birdlife... Shocked

But who'll be Lamma's Don Quixote storming the windmill-on-the-hill? Guy Quixote?

But I got kind of used to calling it "Magical Spinney Thing", even though I didn't know at first what it meant.

Somebody reported the Quixotine rotating yesterday, so it's already going into the test phase? Viva la Quixotine!

I suspect they were just checking the blades one at a time, and sharpening them to the peak of perfection. Wink

Oliver wrote:
HKE and the government regulators are behaving as if noone in the whole world has ever built a wind turbine before!!! (Ooh, we must be careful!)

Here they are with one poky 800kW (if that) turbine while the Danes are now busy building offshore and onshore wind farms with dozens and dozens of 6MW (8x more powerful) turbines hooked straight into the grid and expected to produce 10% of their national demand soon.

It certainly looks like a public relations exercise from here. It is a toe clipping’s-length step in the right direction, while at the same time they take the long jump in the opposite direction by building that horrible extra chimney and generators next to our lovely local coal heaps.

Now let us all bow our heads and say the SAR Prayer:

Our landfill dug from mountains
Hollowed be thy borrow areas.
May our jobs and positions remain carved in stone
And do those things the way we always have done them.
We pray to the white elephant that it may be our savior
In times of trouble.
We will ignore simple straightforward solutions regardless of temptation.
Complicate, Resist, Disseminate and Obfuscate.
For ever and ever.

Amen

To illustrate Oliver's point about windmills being commonplace in other parts of the world, here's a photo shot by my friend Russell Johnson who edits the excellent travel site/blog/podcast/radio channel/video site www.ConnectedTraveler.com.

He captions this very nice photo:
"I shot this scene at sunset, flying over Altamont Pass, between Livermore and California's Central Valley. From the ground they seem almost alive, like benign space aliens, murmuring in the wind."

The future look of Lamma's rolling hills?

Maybe we can get an aerial photo of our Quixotine soon as well.
Soundbydesign, are you reading this??

NEW Red Light District?
Is there an old one? And the former DanKwaiFong doesn't count, despite the presence of a certain lady of ill repute on that corner...

But is one red light on top of the windmill enough for a Red Light District? We need some more!

Remember Le Moulin Rouge in Paris, the red windmill, the world-famous nightclub on Montmartre, in the middle of its own Red Light District?
Great place and great show (learnt from a bit of my research during a few business trips to the City of Lights).
So we'll get Le Moulin Blanc, the white one!

But what kind of entertainment does HEC have planned for Le Moulin Blanc? Tourist info displays on sustainable energy won't cut it. We'll expect a lot more from Lamma's Red Light District! Suggestions!

The term "red light district" may well be accurate since there are also a couple of red beacons in the north side of Luk Chau Wan (near the cable tunnel Pak Kok entrance).

Hongkong Electric wrote:
The TURNING Point • Lamma Wind Power Station Naming Competition

Hong Kong will soon enter a new era. In early 2006, our city’s first commercial-scale wind turbine, constructed by Hongkong Electric on Lamma Island, will formally come into operation.

To mark this occasion, Hongkong Electric is proud to announce “The TURNING Point • Lamma Wind Power Station Naming Competition.” Through this competition, Hong Kong people will have the chance to name the Lamma wind turbine and exhibition centre, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors every year. Suggestions should be concise and easy to remember, and they should reflect the uniqueness of the wind power station.

The wind turbine will have a rated power capacity of 800 kilowatts to generate about 1 million units of “green electricity” a year. We believe this pilot project will contribute to the development of renewable energy in Hong Kong.

Act now — enter the competition and be a part of this important chapter in the history of power generation in Hong Kong!

Rules & Regulations
* The proposed name can be in either English or Chinese. There are no restrictions on the number of words and no limit on the number of entries
* Participants should fill in the entry form with a description of the meaning behind the proposed name in no more than 100 words

I just love the logo of the Smart Power Campaign, see below.

It's based on a Thumbs-up idea, but it's so easy and obvious to replace it with another finger, if you don't like the "Lamma Wind Power Station" (as HK Electric is calling it for now, pending the new official name)....

I like it, so I won't do that...

But that's a really, really long thumb in the logo...

But we should come up with a few names ourselves that HK Electric's competition judges might like, not something Lamma-cynical, but something friendly, eco-conscious and promotional.

Maybe something like "Tower of Power" or "Peace, Love & Warm Wind" or "Smart Winds Powering Our Future" or "The Sweet Whoosh-Whoosh Sound of Progress"?

Thanks for considering my names prize-worthy.

I didn't think so, otherwise I wouldn't have published them here, sending them in to the competition myself, obviously.

Did you read Liz Gower's letter in SCMP yesterday? What irony! The thoughtless and unnecessary waste of fossil fuel to demonstrate environmentally friendly electricity generation. Thank you Liz. I never would have known about this without your letter. I hope you don't mind my placing it here.

Lamma fumes

Hongkong Electric recently opened an education centre at Hong Kong's sole wind turbine with great fanfare. Lamma Winds, the public-relations department suggested, demonstrated the company's commitment to an environmentally sustainable future.

Can someone from Hongkong Electric therefore explain why the company considers it necessary to provide a minibus service up and down the gently sloping hill upon which the turbine is sited on Lamma Island? Could they also explain why the driver is allowed to sit waiting at the top of the hill, with his engine chugging away, before picking up the passengers for the downhill trip?

Lamma has, until environmentally friendly power arrived, managed to move its population around without internal combustion engines - apart from when they need an ambulance.

Do the day-trippers not have legs?

LIZ GOWER, Lamma
