Have you noticed that some people get irritable, irrational and moody at a certain time every month? I'm referring of course to the beginning of the month when buyers of monthly tickets realise that it is the first and their ticket has expired. Hence they are not allowed on the ferry to go to Central to purchase a new one without first forking out the fare.
Entreaties, threats, bribes all fail to move the officials who simply say "must pay, must pay!"
Why does a conflict over such a small amount of money cause such frustration and anger? Was I right to take revenge for their inflexibiliy by urinating all over the washrooms and sticking chewing gum in the turnstyle slots?
Dr Freud, please help. |

Believe it or not, the ticket situation is rather better now than in the HYF era. Then, for many years, you couldn't buy your monthly ticket on Lamma at all. When they finally relented it was at an absurdly inconvenient time like 2-4 pm on the Sunday before the end of the month; exactly the time residents were least likely to be anywhere near the pier. If you did turn up there the staff semed bewildered and unsure of what to do.
Of course now that we have magnetic tickets that can be programmed with an arbitrary period or number of rides, one might ask why they are still limited to the exact 1st-last of the calendar month as they were when they were plain plastic embossed with the month of validity. Why not buy a monthly ticket starting on any date? It would save the crowds and tension, or being unable to renew on the turn of the month. But of course it would also lose the windfall from forgetfulpassengers paying a full fare on the way to Central before renewing there. |

Little suggestion about paying for the monthly ticket...
Perhaps add the "pay for yout monthly ticket" days on the events calendar here too? It's not exactly an event I know but it might be a way to remind monthly ticket holders to pay.
Is that doable L-G? |

Monthly ticket? What's that? Who's using those?
Oh, you mean people still NOT working from home who have to go to town almost every single working day? Poor guys... OK, got it now.
Of course, it could be added to my Lamma Events Calendar, but wouldn't it make more sense for people to set their private reminders (recurring monthly) in their own reminder software like Outlook or whatever they use for appointments and reminders?
Also, I don't think that people check out the Events Calendar on a regular basis yet and it doesn't automatically remind people with messages, so they'd miss the date. As this is a regular monthly reminder, maybe I should also add reminders to the Events Calendar for "Pay your rent", "Pay the electricity bill", etc.?
OK, enough silly remarks for now, I'll have a look at the terms of the monthly ferry ticket renewal dates at the ferry pier and consider your request. _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

Fair enough Lamma-Gung...
But then again, when it comes that time of the month, there posters at the piers about renewal of monthly ticket details of when and where to go. Perhaps absent minded and forgetful people need a Lammadonna election style poster campaign as their reminder...
By the way, I think renewal dates are usually 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st and 1st (if not also 2nd) of the months. Waaaah... that's a whole week of notice to pay up! |

It is indeed - that time of the month again!
Monthly ticket holders please note the cashier is in action for January 2004's monthly ticket payment from December 30, 2003 to January 2, 2004 inclusive!!
In the meantime, Happy New Year to you all |

Thanks for the timely warning. Since I will be away for two weeks, it's not worth buying a monthly ticket for January, so in the meanwhile I'll be scouring the timetables to locate the cheaper slow ferries.
But absent-minded old farts will always be with us, so please repeat the alert this time next month! |

On Samson's earlier request, I've added it to the Lamma Events Calendar recently and will do so at the end of every month with the exact dates of the monthly ferry ticket sale. Check it out in the new Events Calendar section in the new Portal:
Click the "home" Button above, then click "Events Calendar" on the left side. Or click here _________________ Click here for new Lamma-zine stories and recent Photos of the Day and Artworks of the Day |

You are such a legendary person, Gung
As for ferry time-tables, Sneaky-O, there are some available for free with the 2004 calander at the ticket sale counter at the YSW pier. Otherwise, try the HKKF website: http://www.hkkf.com.hk/route/eroute.html |

Another cycle of the moon has past, and it's time once again to pay our tributes to the HKKF monthly shrine! Ticket holders should hand (a portion of) their hard-earns to the man/woman behind the counter on Jan 30 & 31 and Feb 1 & 2, 2004 |

Thanks - I'm determined to beat the system this time!
And also to be down at the pier early to laugh at those who forgot. |

Indeed, what better way is there of starting the month than handing over HK$450 for the pleasure of sitting on a small cramped fast ferry which is a fire hazard or a slow diesel-stinking slow ferry with seats which only go a quarter of the way up your back. Oh joy of joy! _________________ You can tune a guitar, but you can't tuna fish |

| So if I buy the monthly ticket on this Saturday (28/feb), I'll not able to use it until 1/mar, right? |

| What about the late night 12.30 ferry from Central on the last day of the month - technically after midnight - is that Feb or March? I can see great ferry rage potential there! |

But if you are a first timer, you need to see the lady at the 'office' at Central pier a couple of days beforehand because it takes time to prepare the card!
Anyway, she'll give you a form to fill out and you need to submit 2 passport photos, (I think) a photocopy of your ID card and $490 ($450 for monthly ticket and $40 deposit) |

So, Sneaky-O and Bunnyrabbit go out to celebrate Leap Year in Wanchai on Sunday evening, 29th February. They turn up at the Central pier at 12.20 in time for the last ferry back to Yung Shue Wan.
Sneaky-O has a ticket valid until the end of Feb, but, as usual, has forgotten to renew it for March. The office for renewal is now closed.
Bunnyrabbit has a brand new ticket valid from the first of March.
It is now 12.20 a.m. 1st march and the ferry will be leaving in a few minutes.
Who is allowed on the ferry?
