Sorting My Records:
A Power Point Mix about Record Collecting, originally presented at a colloquium in the music department at the University of Hong Kong in October of 2010, is a hybrid presentation that combines the seemingly mundane aspects of power point with relevant sounds, images, and video clips along with live narration.
The model for this hybrid, as noted in its title, is the “mix” or “playlist” of the DJ. Moving at a fast pace, Sorting My Records elicits an information overload that necessitates that the audience pick and choose between the written word, the spoken word, the image (moving or still), or the sound, in essence, giving themselves over to the flow of sound and image as one might do at a concert or in a disco.
Nevertheless, the ostensible topic is instructive, guiding the audience through the psychologies of collecting, the history of recording technologies and their impact on musical culture, with specific reference to Andrew Guthrie's edition “Broken Records: 1960 – 1969” which documents one 45 rpm for each year of that tumultuous decade. This edition will be on sale at all of the scheduled events.
Now, after the successful reception of the initial presentation, Andrew Guthrie has organized a mini-tour for Sorting My Records: A Power Point Mix about Record Collecting with 3 dates and locations spread across diverse regions of Hong Kong in an homage to, and parody of, the D.I.Y. tour of an indie band. The date on Lamma Island will be the culmination of this tour and will include new information related to Reggae’s influence on “remix culture” and the strange confluence of “high” and “low” culture in the continuing ways people consume and produce music.
Lung Kong Restaurant on Saturday April 2 at 5pm
38 G/F Main Street, Yung Shue Wan
Lamma Island
This event is free and open to the public
