Accidentally ended up in Luk Chau the other day and was fascinated by it.

Does anyone know how it ended up so derelict?

Does anybody still live there?

Did it end up it its current state simply because of a lack of a ferry?

Also, would love to get closer to Luk Chau Island. Thought that once I got to Luk Chau village, I'd be as close I could get but it still seemed a little way off. Is is possible to get to the coast on Lamma nearest the island without having to go full-on bush bashing?!

One of the best ways to learn about Luk Chau, Search for Luk Chau on the top right of our home page:
Photo albums on how to get there, about the village and its major yearly dragon boat races at their temple/pier.

Only place on Lamma where they actually burn the lion after the lion dance for the races.

From Centamap, based on govt survey maps.
Should be a few buildings and a pier on the point opposite the island.
In many of these villages locals block access and build fences to keep people out, even if it's government land, and many keep vicious dogs they let run loose for the same reason. There is a "dog rescuer" there with a pack of half wild dogs that have attacked and wounded people. Bring a walking stick to keep them at bay -- no joke.

Obvious thing is to get a boat.

It's been a long time since I was in the village, but there were several very well off people who lived there and commuted by boat to HK.

I guess that with the oncoming development at the quarry that any land owners there are rubbing their hands and quadrupling their rents and prices.
Even though it will still be easier to get to Aberdeen than climb across the hills to it unless someone builds a tunnel or cuts a path around the coast.

Yeah! Had an encounter with a dog pack! Horrible! What on earth is going on there?!

Love to know more about buying a boat if anyone can explain to me how to go about it.

Even thinking of swimming out tot he island if fear of tiger sharks doesn't get the better of me..!

Are those people in the lion dance video LUk Chau locals?

The place looked completely deserted when I went there. Was that really this year? Gotta go next time.

Yes, a lot of the dragon boaters are probably family and friends who have left Luk Chau as soon as they grew up.
Go there on a holiday or a weekend, locals use Luk Chau for their occasional weekend home, but living off-island, like more and more Lamma indigenous residents. A few friendly locals and a few secluded expats who don't seem to have hardly any contact with the rest of the island, having their own boats to get out of this almost deserted village for almost anything.

Rentals for a entire house can be as little as a small flat in other parts of Lamma. Landlords are hoping for massive raises after the doubling of the Lamma population after the building of the neighbouring New Town inside the ex-Lamma Quarry on Sok Kwu Wan Bay, just a few minutes away on the current paths. A direct connection might be part of the massive, multi-billion$ building plans. Haven't seen a recent plan yet and the Govt. doesn't seem to be in any hurry, even though it was rumoured that parts of the Li Ka-shing empire will be building it? Years away or decades away?

I always wanted to visit Luk Chau Island ("Dog Island"), but you need somebody who's on good terms with the completely feral dogs over there, maybe one of the people who've been feeding them occasionally?

Sally Andersen would know how to get there, the highest-profile, long-time resident of Luk Chau, known and interviewed all over HK.

There were stories that there were drug dealers using the island a few years ago. Completely stupid, since it's all out on the open, no cover, and anyone can see your comings and goings from the hills above the village.

PS -- if someone is going there to feed dogs regularly, maybe that's how this rumour started.

I thought Luk Chau meant "Deer Island," - not that I'd know anyway, having terrible Chinese - it's just what the sign at Luk Chau village says.

Are there really feral dogs on the island itself? Poor things! What on earth do they eat? Are there any man-made structures on the island?
