A Chinese friend said she saw a report that HKKF woud reduce the fare by 10% in July.
Can anyone confirm this?
I can't find anything in English news sources, and of course HKKF's website is as useless and out of date as ever.

Would make sense as the major reason for all the increases has been cost of fuel, and now oil is about 1/3 the price it was a couple of years ago.
Can't believe they would do it without arm twisting though

Officially announced today.

Ferry firms to offer discounts as profits soar
2016-04-15 HKT 15:28

Two companies operating six ferry routes to outlying islands have agreed to offer discounts of around 10 per cent starting from July.

This comes after the government revealed that the profits of Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry and New World First Ferry companies had sharply increased over the past 18 months due to a steep fall in oil prices.

The companies have said they will use half of this profit, amounting to HK$22 million, to offer fare discounts.

Discounted fares will be offered on ferries to the islands of Cheung Chau and Peng Chau; to Mui Wo and Chi Ma Wan on Lantau; and to Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan on Lamma.

The two operators had received a HK$190 million government subsidy when their licences were renewed.

Thanks for the quick news, Alan, well ahead of the major English newspapers!
This has been rumoured in the Chinese press for a while now.

A major discussion started almost within seconds of me posting this great news on Facebook

Backtracking on the announcements already, instead of "reductions starting July" yesterday, it's "for several months" today.
Prepare for massive opposition from island residents when they want to put fares back to today's massively overpriced, soaring-profits levels after just a few months of reductions. SCMP today:

Subsidised Hong Kong ferry firms to cut fares due to excessive profits amid low oil prices

SCMP today:
"Discount of around 10 per cent on Hong Kong, Kowloon and outlying island routes will last several months, says transport minister."

Prepare for massive opposition if they try to raise fares again after a few months, especially as the oil price has dropped to a QUARTER since the last fare hike a few years ago, which was justified with higher oil prices back then.

Lamma ferry fare concessions, but just from July - Dec 2016!
Future rates might go back to current levels in Jan 2017, or even higher, not determined yet.
Reduction almost 20% for Lamma routes, 24/7. YSW-Central from $17.10 to $14! Monthly tickets $658 reduced to $538.

SCMP story, May 19, 2016:
Ferry Fares to Outlying Islands Cut

Details just announced, big concessions for all weekdays:

Starting today, July 1, 2016, till end of the year, the first ferry fare REDUCTION in living memory, I think!
HKKF was making "excessive profits" of over 32% (!!), according to Marine Dept., and was probably arm-twisted in giving a fare concession for just half a year, even though nobody expects oil prices to skyrocket back to the old prices by end of the year.

Expect major publicity fireworks in most off- and online media when HKKF tries to put their fares up to former or even higher fares on Jan 1, 2017!

This reduction also applies to the Central - Sok Kwu Wan route. There was only one more passenger the last time I took that ferry during daytime, a few weeks back...

More details...

This concession has been extended twice now since the original end by end of Dec '16. It'll finally end today, March 31, 2017.

Back to the old fares for the two Lamma routes of HKKF, Central to Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan, an almost 25% increase over the current, reduced fares...

More details in the Lamma-zine today, plus discussions...
