I got this book some time ago to identify all the local wildlife:
A Colour Guide to Hong Kong AnimalsHill, D.S. and Philips, K.
Don't know if it's still in print.
Could ask at the major bookshops.
HKU has this guide online:
Reptiles of Hong KongYour snake sounds like a Copperhead Racer.
{L_QUOTE}:
Coelognathus radiatus
Copperhead RacerTotal length Average 150 cm, can reach 210 cm.
Description Back brownish, yellowish or greyish, with 4 black stripes which broken into streaks on the neck.
Stripes distinct on the anterior half of the body, fade and disappear further down.
Head with black collar, 3 black lines radiate from behind each eye.
Ventrals greyish; Scales weakly keeled.
Habitat Prefer open, dry, hilly, rocky habitat in grassland and shrubland.
Seldom in high mountain and broad-leaf woodland.
Absent from the interior of dense forest.
Behaviour Diurnal. Active and fast-moving snake.
Vicious and aggressive.
When threatened, inflates the neck to show bluish skin, bend the anterior half of body into loops and mouth widely open.
Will strike and bites when handled.
Anyway, snakes don't hunt people. As long as you don't step on them they will just slither away.
I've never been bitten here in 20 years and walk in the countryside a lot.
But have been bitten many times by centipedes.
