A notice up outside the police box:
Bike clearance on pier 17 & 20 Feb 2014

All "illegally parked bikes" (which is all of them, since there isn't any legal parking on Lamma) will be confiscated and destroyed if on the pier on those dates.

Thanks to our glorious local government for all their care.

"The notice also does not say where the bikes will be taken - hopefully not straight to landfill or, as last time, left to rust in the building site next to the new police station.

It does also not explain where people are supposed to park their bikes while the bike park is being built. Presumably if District Office cared about the people they are supposed to serve, this will have been thought about and adequate provision will have been made.

Perhaps Lamma.com.hk readers can help find out by writing to tellme@1823.gov.hk and posting their letters and the responses to your website?

This sign below [in the Football Pitch] perplexed me as we have no parking spaces designated for pedal bicycles. I wonder where the nearest one is to Yung Shue Wan? Possibly Cheung Chau where District Office built a bike park that no-one uses because it is inconveniently located. All that money and the good, sensible people of Cheung Chau still park their bikes against the railings."

One more clearance this Thu morning, Feb 20. They'll also clear the area outside the Library where the yellow works office container has been shipped in a few weeks ago.

Here are the photos and comments about the last operation, less than 2 year ago:

The confiscated bikes have been moved to a cleared and padlocked area along the cable road, just below the windturbine.

A few pics from about 5pm.
A few dozen bikes still on the railings but now there is a stretch of barriers and hoardings on the north side where they will be doing the works.

A few more photos, a sight so rare, it's only seen once every two years or so, for just a few hours:

Revised video by Robert John. He writes:

Yung Shue Wan Pier Bike Removal

"Published on Feb 17, 2014

Special thanks to the Hong Kong police, government employees and the Lands Department for letting me film on the pier while they worked. This footage was shot on my Canon 70D and edited in both Sony Vegas Pro 12 and HitFilm Ultimate 2 using their Cine filter.
Music by Andrea Bocelli: Romanza 'Time to Say Goodbye' was used in this video for a non-profit student project."

So he noticed that he'd titled it "2004 Yung Shue Wan Pier Bike Removal"?

"l expect you know this already, but just in case you don't and know someone who has 'lost' a bike from the recent 'clear up' on the ferry pier, I noticed where they are being kept and thought I would pass the information on to you to share.

They are just up from the old reservoir almost at the top of the cable road before you get to the Lamma Winds, on the left hand side as you are looking up the hill. Held in an area behind a chained gate/fence, but the gap under the gate is deep enough for anyone to crawl under, and bikes could be lifted over the top and passed to a friend the other side. You can see all the bikes easily from the cable road."

There are about 80 bikes there, nothing really nice but at least half still would do as "ferry bikes". Several have HKE plant registration plates.

There is no reason to put them way up there except to avoid the bad publicity they got last time when they just took them directly to the compacter at the waste depot.

If you want to liberate a bike, there's a gap where the fence meets the fence around the reservoir....

Might not be there long. Now that both bike purges have been held they will probably spirit them away to be destroyed out of sight.

For the sake of history, here's how the confiscated bikes dumped on the cable road look like today.

Most unusual angle of the new "Temporary Bike Park"!

You've got a new drone or quadcopter? Or a really long lens shooting from high up at the Trig Point?
