There is going to be a solar eclipse very early in the morning on May 21st.

I'm wondering if it is possible to see from the Windmill??

Details from the Observatory

Perhaps it might be visible from the pavilion above the windturbine, but part of HK Island might obscure it. The last time I was up there at sunrise was a few months ago, but the location of the sunrise has shifted a lot by now, of course,

Another viewing location would be Ling Kok Shan, the hill behind Sok Kwu Wan with the Telecom Tower, unobstructed view, but a bit early to get up there. Here's a sunrise-facing photo I took two weeks ago from Ling Kok Shan.

Even if we'd arrive too late for the sunrise, you'd still get this spectacular early-morning views over all of Lamma during these beautifully clear days:

Who's up for a Annular Solar Eclipse viewing tour on Mon May 21?, starting in YSW on 5:30am or meet up at the Lamma Winds pavilion at 6am?

But first, we'll need to check the exact location of the sunrise from that location, to make sure it's not behind HK Island obstructing the eclipse?
Who's up for that? I'll volunteer if nobody else does, sunrises are spectacular these days, at about 5:45am these days.

Thanks for the heads-up, Foxy, I didn't notice that this is in the wrong forum, where it'll be auto-deleted after 1 month of inactivity.
Moved to the permanent Local Events forum....

But you're raising an interesting point: Why should we give a heck about this event if we can't make any money from it!!
"Everything I do is related to making money!", as a Lamma property agent proudly told me the other day in person.... She stared at me in disbelief when I told her that almost everything I do is not for any direct financial gain, but just for fun or as a personal favour.

I'm definitely going up to Lamma Winds on the morning of the 21st with my dog. I can't make SKW as I have to go to work that morning. So count me in,... I'll see you there. If I'm organised enough we can have a breakfast picnic :-)

I've seen many spectacular sunrises from Tai Wan To beach, but very much looking forward to seeing it from the Wind Turbine. (Will make me realise why I still live here when surrounded by many villagers that worship money and don't give a fig about others, or Lamma where money is concerned!)

And of course apologies for sticking this in the wrong forum! LOL

According to the HKO, the next annular solar eclipse observable in HK will occur in 2320. So perhaps it's worth getting up for.

Here's a photo taken from the hill above the Lamma Quarry, taken at sunrise today by "Banny the GPS Mountainbiker".

That hill (tallest of mid-Lamma, 150m, higher than the windturbine at 100m) and the even taller Ling Kok Shan (250m, the hill behind Sok Kwu Wan) might be better and much taller locations than the wind turbine pavilion, also because they're further South and might avoid TaiTam Park hills?

See my revision of your great map above. The hill above the Lamma Quarry would be in the middle between these two spots.

But as the eclipse lasts till 20 degrees above the horizon, so any high enough location on Lamma might be fine.

Yes, the same forecast as for the last two days, when it was actually sunny and hot and not a drop of rain. It took 2 days for the actual weather, till today, to catch up with the so often totally wrong weather forecasts.

If the Observatory forecasts "showers", I'm sure to leave the umbrella at home.
Best way to forecast the actual weather, let's look out the window on early Monday morning and see what the sky looks like there and then.

But where to get the necessary eclipse watching equipment? Anybody got some left over from the last eclipse some intrepid local and children watched from the windturbine and even the Trig Point on the Snake Trail, taking eclipse shadow photos, while I was making an animation from eclipse pictures afterwards?

Bailey's will be most welcome for our coffees during our "Lammannular Solar Eclipse Breakfast" up on the hill, inside the Windturbine Pavilion, Monday, May 21, 5:30am; as long as the weather is not too horrible and there's at least partial visibility.

Sunrise at 5:45, eclipse at maximum at 6:08am, ends at 7:16am.

Even if the visibility is not perfect it should still be a great, Lamma-style, fun event:
Sunrise watching, eclipse watching AND breakfast with old and new friends above HK's only commercial windturbine, a "Typically Lamma!" event if there ever was one! And you'll still have enough time to get to work in town on time afterwards, after a really great start for your working week!

BYOB, Bring Your Own Breakfast, potluck-style, there's a nice table and seats inside the pavilion and the sunrise views should be great, even if clouds would obscure the actual eclipse. Example:
http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/Blog/Blog-2011-02.html#Feb28

<img src="http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/Blog/2009-07/Focussing-the-Eclipse-b.jpg" align=left hspace=8>Bring your own eclipse watching equipment, like a black plastic or glass, black goggles, or even a spotter scope (I'm trying to borrow one) to project the eclipse onto a sheet of paper, like at the last partial eclipse, observed from the Trig Point along the Snake Trail:
http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/Blog/Blog-2009-07.html#Jul22

To be promoted in the Lamma-zine as well, so we'll hopefully get more than myself up there...

The other, more Southern locations might offer a little bit better line of sight, but I might be the only one if we'd meet in the pavilion atop Ling Kok Shan?

Well, for those who are up there, note that both Mercury and Jupiter rise just a few minutes before the sun and moon:

Mercury rise 5:15
Jupiter rise 5:25
sunrise 5:41

Both are almost full phase, as both are on the far side of the sun (see http://www.theplanetstoday.com/ )

You might be able to see Mercury, 8 degrees above the sun, and Jupiter, 5 degrees, during the eclipse. Jupiter is very bright in a dark sky.
