i know this sounds like a really petty gripe but i was genuinely shocked at the price of pizza at the Pizza Milano now its moved to its new shop.

I know they must be paying much higher rent than before but their prices are more expensive than pizza express in lyndhurst terrace and as far as i can see might be the most expensive pizza outlet in HK, with the exception of the 750HKD one I saw once at a swanky outlet in IFC. ( you did get truffle on that one)

when you consider that pizza is basically italian peasant food for the masses and the fact that this is an outer island, at these prices, circa 150HKD its not a cheap option anymore.

Are we being taken for a ride?

What does anybody else think?

Italian food is the easiest food to make at home, but sometimes its nice to go out to eat.....if you can afford it............wait........we can afford it... if we......................occupy Central now! got slightly carried away.

Best kebab has quite filling pizzas, much cheaper.

Sometimes we get a frozen pizza from a supermarket -- even City Super has them not too expensive, cook and add a few toppings of our own.

You want to blame Milano for these prices? There are deeper issues...related to granting indegenious villagers a right to build a house on agricultural land, lack of enforcing ordinances and so on.

How about maybe finally introducing rents based on REAL floor area rather than hugely exagerated gross floor area and VAT? This is HK, the reality is landlords everywhere mint money, and the 'normal' middle class gets shafted.
Consider Causeway Bay where even B locations are now being charged at 100% rent increase to previous tenants, because mainland tourists apparently cannot live without Gucci bags and a watch from Chow Tai Fook.
Lamma is experiencing the same issue with landlords hiking rents to sky high prices which we in return have to finance as consumers with expensive prices on say 'normal' goods and necessities.

I wont buy Pizza that often there as I used to because of the price, but really let's hope that our mainland tourist 'friends' will do so, Because I do prefer once in a while expensive Milano Pizza to NO pizza at all on Lamma. The Turkish place does not count as pizza in my eyes.

somebody must approach the owner of Pizza Milano and explain that unless they reduce the price of their pizzas, they won't be in business for long. The location is good and they need to attract people who used to go to the Deli for drinks. If they introduced more drinks and Italian aperitivi (Happy hour drinks such as Prosecco served with some free snacks) they could improve their business prospects. Most restaurants make more money by selling drinks than food, as the mark up is higher.

Unless they reduce their prices, i would buy a frozen pizza base (not a pizza) in CitySuper, add my topping of choice and put it in my oven together with vegetarian lasagne and parmigiana eggplant. Yummy!

i have eaten there twice since they opened and found the large pizza not so large anymore, check out the size compared to the small, not much of a difference. that is not on

Wasn't it already $140 something for a large pizza at the old location? They obviously did pretty well there, so I don't see why their customers won't continue to buy for a few bucks more in a better location, but I doubt anyone on miminum wage would spend nearly a day's pay on a pizza and drink. I only paid up the big bucks for the cheese on bread when I had a very serious craving. Anyway, good to see the old Deli has some life back in it. Maybe they can do well enough on their weekend tourist business now

I agree with Tally Ho - isn't $140 about the same as the old place? Anyway, if their prices have gone up it's probably down to yet another greedy money-grabbing bastard of a landlord and little to do with Jenny and co. HK's landlords have a lot to answer for, including pizza prices.

Pizza Milano was one of the few YSW restaurants we've very rarely visited (Lamma-Por doesn't like pizza and I'm not willing to pay such prices for something so simple, cheap and quick to make). But it's now becoming a quick favourite of mine in the new location, due to their all-new breakfast and lunch options.

I still haven't tried any of their pizzas between $92 and $165 yet (same price as in the old location, I think, or just a modest increase), but their new all-day breakfasts and set lunches are very competitive and less pricey than almost all other local "Western" restaurants most of which have moved well beyond my very limited budget. The set lunch below, including soup, with 3 well-done veggies, was a bit over $70.

A glass of wine or champagne only costs $30, way below the $50 in many other local eateries and bars.

I also like their good selection of all-day breakfast choices (-6pm!), for example Eggs Florentine with spinach, the best ones I've had so far in YSW. A great place for my late, light lunches, especially in the middle of the afternoon when the place is almost empty.

That's when the cheerful waitresses have time to chat about what's new and going on in our village, just before tucking into their own, home-made Philippine-style early dinner. I've suggested to them to add some of those *real* Philippine dishes to the menu as we still don't have a Pinoy rest. here (not counting the very tasty and cheap daily set lunch takeaway in "Halo-Halo Myrna's" C-5 Pinoy Store.)

While getting my Halo-Halo on the way home last night, just around the corner from the C-5 Red House, there were at least 3 policemen interviewing a VV driver who had just hit a young Chinese woman. They had to transport her bleeding to the Clinic....

Hmm. Decent pizza is not easy to make - probably only one or two restaurants in HK making good pizza. Are you talking about ready-made supermarket pizza?

Not my standards - let's say Italian standards. Most pizza in HK (and Asia) is crap. Why? I dunno. Maybe because most people hereabouts are happy to eat crap pizza.

Frustrating? No - general restaurant standards in HK are better than in the UK and most parts of Europe. But yes, I am a foodster and I'm fussy.

While on the subject of pizza I will say that Pizza Milano's can be pretty good, but I haven't tried the new place yet. Best I've had in HK is at Pizza Express in Central, which I'd give 8/10 on average. Isola (IFC) is also quite good for pizza, as is Peak Cafe in Soho.

I am with you Marc Antony. It is hard to find a good pizza in Hong Kong, and I have always thought that Pizza Milano makes one of the best in HK, if you like the thin crust variety. Pizza isn't the healthiest thing to eat so I only seek it out once in awhile, but when I do I usually go to Pizza Milano. And I don't mind paying extra for something that tastes good.

Paisano's in Sai Kung and Central is also good (slices are enormous!). Wildfire makes a great mushroom and spinach pizza, and I also think Pizza Express is decent.

Sorry but that place that calls itself "Best Pizza..." is kidding itself. Cheap doesn't always equate with good.

Well, I wonder who made more money from pizza? "Best Kebab" could afford to buy several flats from the takeaway pizzas it sells; Pizza Milano's business was greatly affected after "Best Kebab" opened, selling a great deal more pizzas than kebabs. I can't judge the quality, loving Italian food but not pizza.

Many people seem to love pizzas in HK restaurants ("happy to eat crap pizza."), that's why there are so many and they get successful by providing what most of their customers seem to like which is different from what some "fussy" Westerners might like.

Anybody for pineapple, imitation crab sticks, char siu or truffles on your pizza; or all those funny-shaped pizzas (with cheese oozing out of holes) that Pizza Hut is advertising on TV? They're just promoting "Salmon Cream Cheese Stuffed Crust Pizza", yummy!

Exactly. In Asia pizza is a different kettle of fish. Crap pizza makes good money - it's what the locals want that matters most. Having said that places that make good pizza also do a roaring trade - Pizza Express is jammed most nights, and I imagine Pizza Milano will do just fine in its new location, keeping the likes of me and Nancy happy when we need a fix.

Anyway, who'd like a Pizza Hut on Lamma?

The place was FULL inside last night and not everybody was tucking into pizza. My favourite appetiser: their mixed crostini, a full meal itself with a glass of white at only $30.

Pizza Hut is horrendous. At one of the worst pizza places, "Pizza Box", near HKU, the vegetarian pizza comes standard with corn niblets and kidney beans. No changes or substitutions please. Horrible and indeed it tastes like a pizza box (with corn niblets and kidney beans).
