I've been following this thread with a bit of interest, having witnessed the same sort of thing near my former east-coast Canadian home (Halifax Harbour).

A propos the "Poo Pipe", I am reminded of this very old joke from my Engineering School days, which I managed to dredge out of the archive ....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A group of engineers was discussing the human body, and what sort of engineer must have designed it.

An Electrical engineer thought it must have been one from his discipline, after all - look at the wondrous
nervous system, transmitting all sorts of information, processing it and the like.

A Mechanical engineer felt no, it must be a Mechanical engineer, since the body is amazingly articulated,
can climb stairs, manipulate things so well (opposable thumbs and all that), and so forth.

Another engineer (probably a Chem, but it might have been another) claimed the human body MUST have
been designed by a Civil engineer.

Why?

It must have been a Civil engineer who designed the human body ... after all, who ELSE but a Civil engineer
would run waste disposal pipelines right through the middle of a recreation area?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(With apologies to Civil engineers everywhere :-) )

I took a closer, better shot of this moving drilling platform yesterday from the seashore rocks closest to it, close to the start of the "Poo Pipe" at the Sewage Treatment Plant in progress.

It will be towed by tugboat to different locations and vanish completely by Chinese New Year.

We also need a semi-official nickname for the future sewage treatment plant, the biggest and most expensive project in Lamma's recent history. The latest semi-official total figure I've heard for all the sewage piping works in North and South Lamma, plus the two sewage treatment plants, is HK$440 million, about $80,000 for every single person living here. The govt. is definitely most generous to us islanders, isn't it?

But the plants - under full construction now - are still kind of a "big secret". I still haven't succeeded in getting any plans or visual look of it, despite my good contacts, just a few general sewage treatment specs.

Being slightly amused about all the rumours about the "oil-drilling rig" out in YSW harbour last year, the construction co. has decided very wisely to inform the wider community this time, not just the rural and district councils.

I think it's great to see a more pro-active stance from them, informing more people in advance, without being prompted. Thanks! This will go onto the home page as well, of course. Plus the Chinese version into our Chinese Discussions forum, of course.

I just got this from Leader Civil Engineering:

"We want to inform you that as our YSW sewage treatment plant project is on-going and there is a submarine outfall to be constructed in the sea. You may aware in these 2 days there is a derrick lighter and small boat travelling along the area, which is our preparation work and will be completed by this weekend.

Next week after the Labour Day holidays, there will be another derrick lighter to erect a temporary platform at the sea for our marine construction and a flat top barge will also seat at the area for about 3 months for our work.

Enclosed please find the copy of Marine Department Notice which we already get consent from Marine Dept. for our construction for your reference and we have distributed it to all relevant parties such as Rural Committee, District Councilor and ferry companies etc.

I hope this information can help you to notify our Lamma people so that this time they will not be surprise with "oil drilling rig" located at the sea."
