Does anyone have more details about the incident this morning (9:30am from Central) when, as I heard from someone who had just got off the boat, the boat moved away from the pier far enough to cause the gangway to drop, and some people went into the water?

I mention it because I was in YSW at the time and meeting someone off that boat, he said he just managed to get off in the 1st group of say 10 people, then the gangway dropped, taking a couple of ladies with it. A few minutes after I met him, the cavalry (fire engines etc) came racing thru YSW main st on the way to the pier. But by the time I caught the 11:20 to Central, everything was back to normal apart from some marine police & govt vessels at the pier.

The full story is in the Chinese forum: 南丫島兩長者碼頭墮海獲救 , posted by luckyboy. Translation anyone? Seems as said - the boat pulled away from the pier, due to waves according to HKKF, the gangway slipped and a couple of elderly folk fell off into the sea. Rescued by ferry and pier staff. Seems strange - it would have to move suddenly and relatively far to drop off the pier surely?

No news item in SCMP that I could see today, and nothing on radio or TV yesterday. Obviously there are bigger things going on at the moment...but are we really so insignificant...!!! To me, it is a huge problem. It's not like there was a typhoon or anything.

how did they get them out before the ferry slammed back up against the pier? odd that its not been even a brief in SCMP. somehow it would be hysterical if it was the DB ferry and a few bankers, but old Lamma folk...

Yung Shue Wan Pier fell into the sea accidents rarely occur, Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry ferries a passenger during the berthing of vessels near the hull caused by the big waves pushing Chung, sharp swaying slightly drift away from the pier. Passengers on and off the springboard for a time not stacked on the pier, there hanging and minor semi-drooping, two elderly passengers are getting off accidentally fell into the sea from the springboard Fortunately, sailors and shipping company staff time saved, the two did not cause illness.

Shipping companies: the hull has been fixed with a hemp rope

Air-conditioned high speed catamaran ferry accident Haihong number, length 28.04 m, can carry 388 people, between the Central to Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island. Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry spokesman pointed out that the time of the incident sea park in Hong Yung Shue Wan Pier No., linen ropes fixed by the hull, sailors off the ship down a springboard for passengers.

During this period, caused by strong waves near the docked ship, hull number sea by strong waves pushed Hong Chung, despite pulling ropes, still once unsteady drift slightly away from the terminal, causing a springboard to the end of the shift has not fully stacked on the pier, was semi-vacant and slightly lower status, two landing passengers fell into the sea, once grabbed a springboard to the railings, lower body immersed in water, followed by the sailors, ferry and pier and jumped into the sea rescue personnel threw blisters.

Two elderly grasping bar lower body immersion

Scene, a springboard to the motor cutter wheel ferry and cable control, left and right sides by a steel cable pull springboard, I believe that because the boat floats away from the pier were drawn to the sea so little chance of a springboard to complete. As for the staff to ropes fixed hull details, and the waves caused by the type of vessels berthing, shipping companies have not disclosed.

9:30 yesterday morning, more than 10 elderly men and women similar to the Central Pier in the collection, take the ferry to Lamma Island for fun, and the ferry at 10:04 in Yung Shue Wan Pier berth, passengers filed ashore, the ferry was pushed Chung Tai rapid shaking drift away from the dock, not stacked on the terminal platform, a springboard to the edge, once suspended, and slightly downward sloping, is landing the man swim × (78 years) and the woman Chen × Mei (71), accidentally falling into the sea from the springboard The two were rescued and rushed to the island clinic Shikiji, then left on their own. Re-docked the ferry accident, drove back yard after the passengers disembarked tested.

Maritime Training Institute Vocational Training Council manager Yangpei Jiang pointed out that, in order to promote Chung storms caused the collision, the ship usually docked little way to completely close. Berthing ropes are also used for some flexibility in order to prevent excessive pulling fracture, of which hemp rope fiber cable over a large ductility.

Pier "through the end of" vulnerable to storms affecting

He said the ship berthing, the ideal is also fixed with six ropes of the boat, the bow and stern of the two groups of four ropes, to prevent the hull around the drift, the two ropes to prevent the boat drifting away from the terminal horizontal vessels .

Many of our terminals is a high shelf "through the end of" Design, vulnerable to storms and sea terminals around the affected vessels, or storms may affect the result of low tide, so the boat dock bollards bollards and bridging the gap between high, when the hull below the Pier, ropes may be terminal platform "put up" affect stability hull function.

I think Google still have a bit of work to do. I've had lots of messages claiming to cure "minor semi-drooping" problems just by ordering some pills. Not sure how it relates to ferries though.

Let's hope a real human will do the translation - but also wonder if the source was from the press or not.

More Google translation:

"Springboard for the two old ferry fell into the sea offshore
Ming Pao: 2010-08-26

Drift away from the pier, the ferry accident, a springboard for hanging slightly drooping, two passengers from accidentally falling into the sea. Pictured with the incident Lamma Island ferry line with the company's ferries, the ferry can be seen about two springboard mobile winch cable from the control. (Liu Youguang photo)

Yung Shue Wan Ferry Pier occurred significantly shaken passengers fell into the sea accidents, the figure shows that although other ferries ropes fixed, but the left side of the boat and the wharf is still a small amount of space. (Liu Youguang photo)

O-ship berthing turn sharp waves sway."

I'm getting a better (human) translation of this Ming Pao story, the only Chinese newspaper (?) who seems to have picked up this story, but none of the English ones?
