While living in Papua New Guinea I heard countless reports from villagers of people killed or seriously injured by wild pigs. The wounds usually occur from a goring by the prominent teeth which protrude from the mouth. In addition, villagers expend an enormous amount of energy building pig-proof fences round their food gardens.

However, wild pigs are not likely to pose a similar risk on Lamma. In PNG people actively hunt the pigs, and most of the injuries occur when pigs are cornered and about to be killed. In addition, most of the deaths appear to be due to wounds going septic in remote locations beyond the reach of medical services. I would imagine that wild pigs on Lamma encountering humans would be inclined to run away, rather than attack, as long as their exit is clear.

So why don't we just leave this little piece of nature alone.

We live with snakes, frogs, birds and the dreaded 'Lamma Centipede', as well as the odd feral cat, dog and the odd obnoxious human......and this little creature is not about to do any harm to anyone.

It doesn't have any 'tusks'. (like the ones you see in the movies that come charging out of the bushes.) Does the large black one have tusks?

As they don't seem to be dangerous, (after all that I have read on the subject...) it's nice to have some more 'wildlife' on this island.
