Somebody just told me about a proposed Guinness World Record attempt: Lamma as the most cosmopolitan village in the world, with the most nationalities of any village.

He counted all his friends' and acquaintances' nationalities and got up to 49!
Pretty impressive, but he's a popular guy.

Nancy just mentioned that in the Waterfront "one night there were 5 Filipinas, 1 Indonesian, 1 American, 1 Malaysian, 1 Singaporean, 3 Chinese, 2 English, 1 Australian, and 1 German."

We should do this as an informal count and setting a few ground rules like the person has to have a passport from that country and Lamma being their main residence.

How many people of different nationalities do YOU know living here? This might also make a great party and BBQ game. List the nationalities you know personally (and are sure about) in a message, no need for names for now.

Great count so far!
Its time to take it forward Lamma Gung, please add it to next months blog and we will get a big response.
Any ideas on a shop to put up a map yet? I wll speak with Emily at the ice-cream shop soon, seems like she would be into it!

We really could have a big gathering and photo shoot soon, AND contact the Guiness Book of Records!
No sight of the Irish yet then?

Insomniac,

I don't give a toss about Pak Kok so shall ignore my back button.

Seeing as I said I am Dutch in my post it would be a fairly good guess that i have a Dutch passport.

You're right, it's not that hard.

OK, there are a few more nationalities I know to add to the ones mentioned above. Yung Shue Wan, Pak Kok, Hung Shing Yeh, Sok Kwu Wan, Mo Tat Wan, ANYWHERE on Lamma, please.

Italian,
Finnish,
Swiss,
Malaysian,
Nepali,

We're still far from 50 so far...

I thought that there wasn't any chance of Guinness actually taking such a record seriously. But looking at their site, they have a number of remarkably pointless and silly "records".

Closest to this seems: "The record for the most nationalities in a sauna is 38, achieved by participants from 38 different countries at an event held by Kobe Sauna & Spa in Kobe, Japan on October 17, 2004."

But I think we have little to no chance of being being No 1. For instance, I guess Greenwich Village New York, and probably some places in Thailand (Phuket, Pattaya, say) would score higher on the expat resident stakes. You'd have to restrict the definition of "village" rather strictly to have a chance.

That doesn't surprise me. I believe in Japan, ALL the other nationalities are dumped into one spa/sauna for the sake of hygiene

And LG can do the revealing photo shoot.
Should up the tourism.
Is nudity allowed in Hong Kong or is it against the law?

Yes, that would make a really fine photo opportunity!

These are all great suggestions for locations! A few more and we might put them to the vote.

Not sure about legality of nudity in HK, but at least on Lamma it seems to be OK, as long as nobody lodges a formal complaint to the police. Even walking nude at noon through Main Street will not get you fined, as long as you don't bother anybody. But the police will stop you, cover you up and send you home, according to a recent example.

Alan, I didn't know that clothing was optional at the May Pole dance? The photos I've published in the past were nudity-free. Maybe they wait till all photographers have left before taking their swimsuits off?

Lamma has a claim, which has caught my interest. But why the fixation on the 'Guiness Book of Records'. Wikkipedia's entry is more used. Number of drums banged in a room (HK's latest attempt) WTF? Most people eating Kimchi (Korea) WTF? :)
