04/11/2006 - As shown in an earlier image by Wingman, there were at times dozens of these Dark Veined Tiger and Glassy Tiger flying around a bush along Power Station Road down by the beach.
Due to a recent fire, presumably caused by a cigarette being discarded at or since Lamma Fun Day, there were about 10 there today.
At various times throughout the year, they congregate around & settle on a particular type of bush, presumably to mate & lay their eggs......... I haven't seen this phenomenon anywhere else on Lamma in such numbers.
However very little remains of the bush now......... and probably their eggs.

21/08/2006 - Watched this chap for several hours over the last couple of days........ at first thought he was being territorial, but then noticed he was attacking & leaving with flies he'd caught........ then one time he attacked & made off with a Potter Wasp. Returning about 5 minutes later to continue his fly-fest.
Noticed as well when another Vespa velutina approached they got into a fight & he ripped off half its leg..... nice chap.
He became quite aggressive toward me as well........., so when photographing had to keep still while he circled inches from my eyes..... he didn't like me being around.
Are also known as "Killer" wasps as described in a previous posting.

20/08/2006 - an okay image of some sort of fly sucking it up.
Had to clone out a couple of dust spots & rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise to give it a horizontal perspective.
Quite like the refelection although is obviously not a very natural look.
May have oversharpened it just a tad.
Taken with a 60mm Macro lens atr 250ss & 36/f & C1R1 & SB800 Flash units to get the depth of field.

16/08/2006 - as per a previous photo of the Paris Peacock is meant more as a photo of the subject in its environment.
Photo isn't bad, but could have shown a little more environment & less subject & might have been a little more pleasing - as it is, is neither one nor the other.
Background colours are quite nice
{L_IMAGE}
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

15/08/2006 - apologies for not posting anything about the photos for a few days but having been busy trying to get a decent shot for a bug photo competition.
This isn't it........ but was fairly close.
Photo was taken about 4" away from the lens & was taken with a slightly different flash set up to some of the previous wasp photos.
One major problem using the SB800 "on camera" was that I tended to get a shadow from the antennae falling across the eyes of the wasps.
Seem to have dealt with that using the SB800 & C1R1 unit.
Think I may have oversharpened this image just a little too much in Photoshop coz you can see a very slight halo along the right side of the head - nothing that couldn't be put right if I could be bothered.

08/08/2006 - Vespa velutina portrait......... in flight
Needed to use the shadow highlight thingy in PS to bring out the abdomen.
Problem is a little too much flash used & have got the double reflection from the 2 flashes in the eyes.
Look like a couple of dust bunnies in the lower right but don't see how they could be......... had the sensor cleaned 2 days earlier & never removed the lens since taking it back from Nikon. Although they did say my lens needed cleaning inside.

First day with the new flash unit. Quite satisfied but has it's limitations - single shot before refresh, can't get enough DOF with just the 2 units so may have to use the SB800 to add more light........ unless anybody has any suggestions...... please

05/08/2006 - an anvironment shot of a Paris Peacock.
Is ok coz the head is in focus and the blurred wings give it a more natural appearance.
Subject is a little too centred & may have been nicer with a little more environment around it.

04/08/2006 - Is quite a good shot of a Potter Wasp, but once again the shadow from the antennae is across it's face.
Amount of flash is just about right with no reflection bouncing back from the wasp. The only reflection is from natural sunlight.
Composition is ok although could have had a little more space around the subject.
DOF is good having got most of the wasp in focus without showing too much detail in the background, although a smoother background would've been better.
Big downside to the image is the missing leg.
But then again, have only come across one other person getting photos of Bees & wasps in flight, & he's using a computer attached camera with laser beam trips to get his images, and not nearly as close as this shot.
Shot was taken using a 20mm extension tube............, meaning the wasp was within about 6" of the end of the lens.

03/08/2006 - Long-tailed Shrike wind-blown

Nothing more than a novelty shot.
Too many things wrong with the shot........... lousy perch, turd on the post, bird facing away, shutter speed way too low coz of the very bad lighting etc etc......
Didn't want to use flash coz the bird was within about 8' & as is a juvenile would probably have been petrified.
But a nice shot to describe the weather today. Dull & very windy.

02/08/2006 - another shot of the same Stink Bug with a little more visible background, but still troubled with the black in the background & with this shot the white interferes as well. Would be nicer if it was more uniform.
Would have probably achieved better with less flash & less adjustment to the exposure compensation, but had just switched from photographing wasps & not really adjusted properly.
Flash unit needs to be lower, but is still quite a nice photo inasmuch as it shows more of the bugs' detail in both light & darks without the flash flattening the detail too much.

01/08/2006 - 01/08/2006 - Some kind of Stink Bug - black background doesn't suit very well - used flash to try & get the depth of field whilst using 60mm Macro Lens & 20mm ext.tube, and with a clear background so ended up with just black - subject is a little too centred & flash too high resulting in the shadow under the body - needs a better flash system

31/07/2006 - similar to a previous image posted of a Pacific Reef Egret, but without the shadow under the beak.
Nice background but sun was a little strong & the legs would look better slightly less exposed.
The light blob behind it's head is a little distracting also.

{L_IMAGE}
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

30/07/2006 - Apologies for so many bug photos, but not so many bird or bird opportunity shots these days.

Have shown these last 2 images of what I think is some sort of Carpenter Bee coz highlights the difficulty of photographing subjucts with Blacks & Whites - in the lower image the the whites haven't blown, but detail in the black areas has been compromised, especially with little detail in the eye.
With this image the blacks have been captured, once again by detail in the eye, but at the expense of the whites which have "blown".
When the whites aren't blown the image can be salvaged in postprocessing.... however not worth the effort with these 2 images coz they aren't really good enough........... both were taken with a 70-200mm lens, where a more appropriate lens would have been a dedicated macro lens :?
