We ate there last week, 16 July. Nice decor, cheap menu but almost empty. After the food arrived we knew why. Tasteless dried out food, maybe reheated from the day before. Never again.

They have tea sets even in lunch hours.

New Holiday Mood has finally cleaned up their act and offer pretty decent food at almost unbeatable prices. Most of my old review above doesn't apply anymore at all.

You get three courses before even ordering a set lunch or dinner, a little salad, 2 fried snacks and the daily soup.
Quick, smiling service, even when almost full at lunchtime. Dessert is also included and the total price comes to something like $30-45 for a set.
Breakfasts from $16.
The new bilingual menu includes almost 200 mostly Chinese dishes.
The dishes we've tried recently were all pretty good and definitely great value.
They also offer Western catering and organise birthday parties nowadays.

After all the many changes in ownership and direction during the last two years, this place has finally settled down and now offers a tasty, low-cost, local cafe-style menu and friendly service by manager Ricky and his wife. I might become a regular there...

Honestly, I have been to there three times.
Breakfast---too expensive, with higher price I expected better quality of food, however, It sucks. I'd rather save my money and go to Man Kee, $20 Breakfast, larger portion
Lunch---Lunch is ok, price is right
Dinner---terrible!!! I have ordered a set dinner with steak!!! Guess what? It looks reasonable thick. When I cut it with my knife... OPPS!!!! Two pieces of BBQ Steak put it together?!! Appetizer is potatoes Salad, ICY, I dunno how they keep the salad... This is disgusting!
Save your 65 bucks on something else perhaps you can buy some steaks with your BBQ griller and some cans of beer

Well, this place is still getting a bad rap, due to various problems in the quite distant past about which I haven't been shy complaining myself.

If it's so bad, then why is it almost full quite often?

We tried to get in yesterday for the afternoon cheesecake set (up to 10 different cheesecakes to choose from on weekends):
It was full inside and harbourside, the first time ever that we couldn't get any seating for two! We had to go elsewhere, while most other places along Main Street were almost empty.
The last time we encountered a totally full restaurant on Lamma was the Japanese BlueBird a few months ago. It has been the highest rated restaurant for a long time now.

Maybe it's time to have another closer look at New Holiday Mood?

No, I think the owner has got the family over for the weekend to see the Bishop

Mostly of tourists. The owner works hard to bring passersby in. After bad experiences few locals will go back I think. We ate there twice, once when it was new and the food was horrible, once a couple of months ago when it was better, but still bland and overpriced. The lunch sets look okay though, but I hardly ever eat lunch here.

I mean for good...

what happend? is it that bad now?

Talking to Ricky and his wife and seeing how many people (mostly tourists, admtttedly) fill the place, often not leaving any free table, I can only say "Hopefully, it won't close anytime soon and I wish them all the best!"

This place is still getting a bad rap from the initially lousy (I have to admit it and I said so at the time) food & service, but memories are too long here...

They've cleaned up their act long ago and it's been a place with decent, often tasty food at bargain prices all this year, in my opinion. Great tea sets, great coffee W/free refills, great breakfasts ($32 for a full American brekfast!). A lot of their food quality and prices compares very well with Man Kee, our own High Street favourite.

Other opinions, please.

Due to the bad comment(s) I heard I've never tried there on my life in Lamma (and not gonna to). I can remember a incident when the owner argued with the customers. I didn't know what happened but it really gave a bad image to me.

And for the menu poster showing outside the shop, I think it could be used as a test for short-sighted.

If you are wondering why i make numerous opinion post on this forum i grew up in a restaurant. my father would take us out to eat everyday when he closed up as an education in food. I chose a life in media instead because i also learned that managing a restaurant will make you slowly go insane. My dad is stark raving crazy now that he is retired. But back to the restaurant , Mr. Lau did my husband and I a great service on a friday night during a rain storm by keeping our frozen food in his freezer until the next day so we would not have to schelp the stuff up the hill to tai peng. I thought so highly of that favor i go there maybe once a month. the last time I was there I ate outside and it was hot and they forgot about me there. I had to walk around to pay. It was not that they were busy it was after the brunch rush on a sunday it was because they busy drumming up new customers in the street. He should relax on selling in the street and be more of a host inside. He should also make a list of sme really good recommendations from all the menus that they have. There are too many choices if you are hypoglycemic and you go there with low blood sugar you would surely die before you can pick out something to eat.

New Holiday Mood = terrible foods + boss w/loud voice + odd waitress

You mean the lady with the red hair?

Ahem, that's not a waitress, that's actually the mainland wife of the boss...

Boss Ricky needs that loud voice to lure in tourists, his main customers.
Amazing that he never gets tired of it and his voice rarely gets hoarse...

I think she's great - very chatty and funny, but I think if she takes a bit of a dislike to you then you can forget it.

I agree.
Fortunately, I'm on her good side these days. She really liked the photo I took of her at their recent 2nd anniversary party. They laminated it and it's hanging outside the restaurant now...

But she hardly speaks any English, so you'd have to interview her...

Pinky hasn't been on Lamma much for the last year or so and when she's back (for Mid-Autumn weekend), she's so quiet and hardly says a word. I miss her outrageous days and our very entertaining chats from before...
