You just have time to order books from Timber Press for delivery in time for Christmas. American publisher Timber Press produces some of the most beautiful books around on gardening and plants, many in association with British publisher Thames & Hudson. All are currently at 30% discount, see newsletter@timberpress.com

Many of the Timber Press books are perhaps geared to armchair gardeners. The hands-on gardening guide for Hong Kong is indisputably Arthur Van Langenberg's "Urban Gardening", published by the Chinese University Press.

And for real gardeners, Love That Lifestyle, 1210 Horizon Plaza, 2 Lee Wing St. Ap Lei Chau, Tel 2656 4429, currently have a great renovation sale -- 50% off all garden equipment (also BBQs and plastic dinnerware).

And finally, somewhere in Hong Kong you must know someone who would enjoy a gift membership for the Hong Kong Gardening Society. Contact Jacqueline Hampshire, our membership secretary, Tel 2550 0059, or e-mail: members@gardeninghongkong.com.

I've just taken the good advice from our Gardening forum moderator and sent in my membership cheque. The monthly printed newsletter alone is worth the low fee, for all the hands-on practical advice for HK gardeners.

There are so many events, tours and workshops these hobby gardeners put on, it's pretty amazing for such a reasonably small group, from visiting the plant/orchid nurseries in the New Territories to trips to Guangzhou and Nepal, plus their spectacular yearly parties, of course. Check out their just completely renovated website at http://www.gardeninghongkong.com.
