If you want to take some pictures of the blooming Hippeastrum in the Court of King Caractacus, er I mean the Tai Peng Community Garden, you'd better be quick - they don't last very long.

Great title for a forum topic!
But I might be a bit slow, why is the extremely exclusive, exquisitely exalted, extravagantly extraordinary Tai Peng Community Garden now referred to as the Court of King Caractacus?

I get it that you're the living impersonation of King Caractacus, but do the other democratically-minded garden member recognise your kingship status, or even elect you into this official position?
Are they all members of your regal Court now and treat you royally?

Let me quote from the lyrics of that famous children's rhyme:

"Now the fascinating witches who put the scintillating stitches in the britches of the boys who put the powder on the noses on the faces of the ladies of the harem of the court of King Caractacus, were just passing by."

Wellllll, most interesting!
The overly active mind boggles and the over-hyped imagination boondoggles....

Who are the witches, powder boys and harem ladies in the Tai Peng Community Garden? WE NEED TO KNOW !!!

I was referring to the last line of the song:

“if you want to take some pictures of the fascinating witches who put the scintillating stitches in the britches of the boys who put the powder on the noses on the faces of the ladies of the harem of the court of King Caractacus, you’re too late! Because they’ve just passed by.”

We have an over-supply of witches and powder boys at the moment, but the harem is a bit depleted - prospective interns please send cv and recent photograph

Oh, you might get into BIG trouble there, zep!

I'd love to hear directly from the "oversupply of witches" and "powder boys"!

What do they think of you appointing yourself as King of the Community Garden and rule with an iron fist (iron trowel?) over your domain?

It's that time of the year again, so if the rain ever stops, why not swing by Tai Peng?

Oh, what a lovely surprise. It does look a spectacular sight, Geoff has done a fantastic job with his hippies! The Tai Peng garden looks wonderful at the moment all the garden members have been working hard. Thanks for posting the pictures Lamma Gung.

The first-ever Hippeastrum starting to bloom on my balcony, bought from above years ago, re-blooming every year without any effort on my part (besides watering occasionally)

From Lamma's Jane the Master Gardener (and Tai Peng Spice lady, most Sunday/Monday evenings selling her wares in Carlito's Way, opposite Jing Jing Bar & Restaurant):

"Visit the Hippies on Lamma Island. Not the laid-back lifestyle loungers of urban myth, but Hippeastrums, spectacular lilies that Geoff Smith has patiently hybridised and grown from seed over many years. For a week or so at this season they make a superb spread of colour that has to be seen to be believed. The Hippeastrums bloom only once a year, and they follow their own timetable, which varies greatly according to the weather. Best guess is that they will be looking good and ready to receive visitors on April 12th. If you are interested, please register early for what promises to be an unusually colourful and varied day including several interesting private gardens and a home-cooked South Indian lunch (all vegetarian, with some fiery dishes and some mild).

Geoff, the grower, will have some bulbs for sale (at prices that compare VERY favourably with what is available commercially) and he will be happy to talk about how he hybridises and cultivates his treasures. See attachment by way of preview.

Date: April 12th

Starting Time: 9.30am ferry to Yung Shue Wan from Pier 4 in Central.

Return to Central: 4.30pm ferry from Yung Shue Wan.

Cost: HK$300 per head for the day (including lunch and beverages).

Booking & further information: Janeram@netfront.net; phone at any reasonable hour: 2982 0330.

Numbers are limited. Prior registration & payment are essential. Cut-off date, April 5."
