The change in weather has encouraged a number of orchids to start to bloom. Yellow Oncidiums (aka Dancing Dollies) are the toughest, but some more exotic looking varieties are also putting on a pretty good show in different places. A friend who takes his orchids very seriously assures me that orchids are actually hard to kill and easy to grow. In the next breath he tells me I am doing everything wrong, so much so that he can't understand how the plants survive.
Oncidiums are usually very inexpensive, all the more reason for starting with them. But be warned that it's all too easy to catch Orchid Fever, at which point they can become a costly indulgence.
I have attached a picture of a yellow Oncidium and another of a more exotic-looking purple orchid that survives on nothing but fresh air -- flowers don't get more undemanding than that!
