Just been to Hung Shing Yeh beach today and noticed that many of the branches were cut from the trees.
Do they do it regularly? And what for?

There appears to be a manic pesticde sprayer spraying vast areas of the greenery in Ko Long area to suppress the vegetation.
Likewise for what? It grows back .
The chemical will penetrate soil when it rains and affect no wild plants.
Post spraying results are awfully unsightly.

A 'manic pesticide sprayer'.. or the government departments that cut back the vegetation and spray to kill mospuitoes???

There is a difference.

"Likewise for What"? Is your question?..... Hmmmm.... just imagine what it would be like if the vegetation WASN'T cut back :-) And the snakes, and the centipedes, etc. And it is usually the weeds that choke everything. (I have no problem with weeds btw)

Government departments cut back the vegetation in my village around twice a year, and I am happy. Only takes two weeks and the vegetation is back. If this didn't happen ... living in Lamma would be like living amongst the 'Triffids' LOL

Anyone remember this movie?

Hung Shing Yeh beach is a gazetted beach, so I'm sure that there are 'tree surgeons cutting the branches in governmental departments (although I could be wrong).

Cutting branches as in pruning plants is quite good as it makes them stronger, although depending on the season and factors, so I'm not unduly worried.

Just get concerned when locals take it into their own hands to kill trees. I 'assume' that HSY is a monitered situation.

LCSD manages the beach. They planted most of those trees a few years ago, to give shade and probably to help stabilise the sand.

There seems to be someone involved there who works hard on cultivating the trees, and also the patch by the creek behind the buildings, and at the barbecue area.

It's about the only public area on Lamma that even comes close to being a park.

Thanks everyone for replying.
By the way, how do I move this post to a more suitable place.
I just noticed that I placed this post in the Buy & Sell area.

OK, moved to Gardening forum, maybe more suitable than Flora & Fauna forum.

Trees need maintenance, and tree pruning is a very ancient practice of keeping these things beautiful, (there are ancient mideval litographs that confirm this). You normally also prune dead branches and shit, just to keep the tree healthy, bugs burrow into the trunk (although it's perfectly normal as the felled tree of diease eventually becomes soil and a nursing log for more trees since the time of Eden).

It's like getting a hair cut or trimming your nails.

Yeah, right. It depends who is doing the pruning. Many govt workers and contractors have no idea ... it's like getting your head chopped off, and your arms and legs. You end up with a few stumps.

They also sometimes poison trees for no obvious reason. Last year they poisoned two trees near our place. Why? We have no idea. But they took them away afterwards, right? No, the dead trees are still there. Great work chaps.

I'm pretty impressed with whoever is looking after the trees and flowers at the beach though, they seem to have a green thumb and know what they're doing.

>> That's odd... does the HK Parks department just hire any monkey off the street? When I worked for the City, back home. We needed 6 months (paid, semi paid, welfare paid lol), kind of training, especially with poison goo, we had to be EXTREMLY careful how to dilute it (now the city doen't use it anymore), we had to learn how to be extremely careful with our pruniing tools, such as disinfecting it after each use, so it doesn't spread fungus and other goo (although that stuff spreads naturally, this mitigates it). We learned how to just let rotting trunks decay to arrange it as a nursing log (most of Canada's urban trees however are quite young). It's an evolving scicence, and art, because you can tell when a tree is old it looks Fugly (fuck+ugly), with all sorts of branckes sticking out like lucky "hair" moles on someone's chin. with scraggly airs (branches), every which way, also you got to prune to the trunk or nearest nubbling ( buds), to keep stumps out, so that the bark can creepy over the wound.

WTF? Trees generally get more interesting and attractive the older they get.

There aren't any parks on Lamma.
So usually it is just any monkey working for another department given a chainsaw who is cutting them down.

There has never, ever been a tree planted or replanted in YSW urban area by the government, to my knowledge. But they'll chop them down at the slightest excuse.

The government's attitude to trees is like its attitude to democracy, or bicycles: support in theory, in practice it's too much trouble so destroy and discourage whenever possible.

Not the ones here in Canada, If not maintained properly they tend to look like really creepy ugly claw like bones, that you see on some horror movie. But perhaps there's some kind of strange disease. Japanese Elm disease mutating them. I say put the really suffering trees out of their misery, and re plant some new ones.

Like Edmonton this is the case Marc, You have ancient hundred year old trees planted by settlers, but in Calgary the sparse trees seem to be aflicted with some diease and as they get older they look really ugly, usually there are nodes clusters on the trunks, that sprout all sorts of branch chutes in all sorts of wild directions.

So yea you are probably right Marc, I was maybe thinking of some tree plague.
Which is why people must prune so that the tree can heal up the bark can grow back (with a scar of course, but that's how animals find their homes.....

>>> If that's the case why not chop down that Hades Tree infront of C-5 Store (the New one in Sha Po). It'll just open up more land for me to cultivate and plant new trees. That thing is practically dead. Speaking of chopping down trees, Chinese Trees have got to be the most hardyest spieces of trees I have met. (Trees in Canada like pines, birch willows, and Oaks (in the East, Trees on Steroids, lol) ,are like toothpicks, or playhouse wood, compared to these White stone column like ones I saw in Shanghai, or here (Like that wacky thick Yeung Shu in town). impressive.

If you report it as "dangerous" they'll eventually remove it.

Vanoclamma............

The sooner you realise this is NOT Canada.... the sooner you will help out keeping the flaura and fauna alive on our fair isle. Seriously now.

I'd rather you used your energy that wasn't making comparisons.

So Welcome to Lamma... different shit basically, and different things that need volunteers and help.

Come on now Tigger. You know from other nonsensical stupidity posts that I'm very much into community service here on Lamma.

It's a treasured Vortex of positivity on a landmine barren Conan (Arnie movies, where he's strutting through some toxic land, or Mordor of hell mounds that is Earth. It's like Costa Rica here, one of those countries that people are working out of their way to kind of make it a better place to live. For now until Summer, (and occasional visits, infreqeuent to frequent visits back to Lamma during Tree time (for Gaia Forest, Bobsy's Forest).

But my caper, if I can pull this off, my masterpiece Caper that haunts my dreams, is trying to get Lammites interested in working with FACD (who gave Foreign Body (a poster here, the ok positive signs to begin slowly working to clean up Sham Wan (I keep on begging you guys to want to do this, but you just dismiss me as an lunatic, I already contacted Ocean Park conservatory about this, they're interested, (however their meagre resources are geared towards Lantau, for the dolphins). If the H.A. Club, Green Lamma, Lamma Green (differnt group), International Ocean Clean Up (we have to organize this), gets together and shares the load over the 5 month period, and reintroduce broods of these suckers back. Then Lamma contains yet another treasure.

I also want to write to YMCA (from what I read here it's a moot point), but meh, to try and see if they won't want to share their land. as a semi-public park. Like a small fee, to camp (we do this in Canada, for park rangers, so they can keep facilities, keep land scaping and conservation, and perhaps raise the support needed to give the kiddies a nature reserve camping, for Scouts or something. (some place where they can safely go camping to do their "Duke of Edinburg" nessities. It's perfect that way they can have a place to camp, (and the permits controls how many people can go in), makes work for the grounds keepers. AND it keeps a habitat for birds and shit.

About comparing Canada to Hong Kong or Lamma, shame on you Tigger, this is humanity's greatest trait, the ability to regard earth as a whole, and apply ideas. This is what made humans so awesome. Like It's ok for me to take some Lamma into Cannada (Bobsy's Forest concept). right?

>>> things I've been doing and will be doing on my short time on Lamma (or in my imaginary world I've already been doing (affermative thing zen stuff),

1)Exporting the Bobsy Gaia model to Canada (a forest is a forest no matter what part of the world. I intend to make frequent trips back and forth from Canada to Lamma (for Vacation, and to plant). But this is going to be soo cool. It's going to be a me thing, that's actually an US thing. A self defining ritual in my life.

2)save up for a Projector like they have at the Lady of Lourdes and a screen so that Lammites can have movie night at Hans Anderson Club, as well as slowly build up a library for children there,

3)Check out the HK public library to see if there isn't some crazy ancient Enlightement era book I can hack to pieces (wikipediaize). I'm sure there is in some special library).

4)Grow a garden out of some wacky garbage (see my post about the Philipeno's c-7 store (this red house in Sha Po). Quite a colosal bummer that I can't get the other half of the yard. Just one half.

5) I make it a habit to pick up litter on Lamma, especially on the piers. ha ha ha, a little Philopeno girl giggled at me one night and asked "why do I keep on going back and forth" (I'm thinking about going out with a bag just fold it up and tos in the crap), I'm that fat kid with the garbage in the hands frequenting main street. The Majong grannies at the park infront of the temple notice me.

6) Give blood leaving permenant mark to Hong Kong.

8) volunteer with the Hans Anderson club. Movie night is going to be sooo fun. Kids watching Funny movies, (family friendly movies), or during Halloween throw on some Chinese super natural funnies. Like Spooky Encounters of the Spooky Kind. Staring "Sammo Hung". yeahhhh that'd work actually. It's clean, it's funny. Because this is a family oriented thing. Somehow, Scream 1-4, final Destination, are not appropriate. I definatly want to introduce the kids to My Little Ponies. There is something addictive about kids laughing. And seeing a bunch of goofy coloured creatures doing goofy thing.... Sponge Bob.... Oh oh gotta get the kids that.

I've been bitten by the volunteer bug in Canada a long time ago. And I'm infesting Lamma with my Canadian Volunteering diease germs. Soon we'll come for you Tigger. One of us, one of us one of us one of us, gooben gaben gooben gabben gooben gabben. gooben gabben. for I am the famous Lamma Zombie! I am Volunteer Zombie! and soon you will bite others, and others and others and soon Lamma will be a Zombie-volunteer outbreak zone. Muaahhahahahahahaahhahahaha...

PS I'm planting trees already at the c-7. NOBODY is telling me what to plant I keep on asking for advices. Oh well.
