I've thought of posting this in the parenting section but I think I'd get a bit more response here.

I'm due to give birth in early March, at Matilda. I'm wondering if anyone has the number of a sampan who would come to YSW pier overnight if I went into labor between last ferry and first ferry?

Otherwise open to additional suggestions, particularly from others who have been there. I know I could go to the clinic and have the police boat take me, but as I understand it I would then be taken to the public hospital, but I prefer to go to Matilda. Is there some way around this? Obviously I know the police boat is not for general transport, so I'm not expecting to use it as a taxi...

thanks all for any help you can give.

9352 1582 or 9709 8441, that's an old couple from Aberdeen who took me on a sampan ride to and around Lamma a few times. They speak Cantonese only though.

Basically you might go to Aberdeen and just ask the people offering sampan services for a card.

You are registered with Matilda for their Maternity package to go there right (package paid for / appropriate insurance)? I ask as you said you 'prefer' to go to Matilda, but if planned on you would know.

Is there anyone on the main land that you can stay with for a few days / one week (around the time where labour is due, according to the dates the doctor has given in your cycle), that would be the best option, certainly when compared to waiting until labour and then taking a ferry (or a sampan?). I am not being facetious, but surely you are kidding about the sampan part.

Best of luck and good health.

I agree with islandcouple. If you want to make sure you'll deliver in Matilda, stay off the island when it's closer to due date. (Mine was 10 days earlier than expected). I'm not sure how fast a sampan can arrive in wee morning hours.

As far as I know, for a medical emergency, a helicopter will transport you, and a police boat is only used if a helicopter can't land.

The wait can be quite long, mine was two hours (from dialing 911 until the helicopter finally arrived), and the same with my neighbor too (she said it'd have been faster if she had taken the last ferry.)

And because the labor had progressed very rapidly, I was transported to the Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, the nearest hospital with a helicopter pad. Not Queen Mary, and certainly not the hospital I was booked in.
