| Post subject: | Feedback on the Lamma-zine |
What do you love and hate about the Lamma-zine? Be honest and frank in your raves and rants! Praise is most welcome, of course, but it's the critics that help me to improve the Lamma-zine! Not hate mail, but constructive, detailed, specific ideas that can be implemented within my limited means. Many feedbacks have been implemented so far. The Lamma-zine is a work in progress and still has a long way to go to become the best e-zine in HK! It has come a long way in the last months, I hope, but is it going in the right direction in your opinion? The Lamma-zine has grown tremendously, frequently more than 20 pages, taking quite a while to load. Is it much too big and long now? Or do you like to read lots of stuff about Lamma? Too many pictures? Not enough? Would you have better pictures for us to use? What topics would you like to read and see more or less off? New ideas and suggestions are always welcome! And all contributors & promoters of good causes & people venting off are most welcome, of course! Almost anything goes, from short quotes to long stories, from completely wacky and crazy stuff to serious & thought-provoking articles! Get instant e-mail & personal feedback from whatever you've contributed! There's way more editorial freedom here than in ANY print publication in HK; and no interest groups to offend or spoil the creative fun! Blatant self-promotion and severely biased opinions are most welcome! What the heck, I do it myself already sometimes! Make the Lamma-zine YOUR publication, the definitive place for former, current and future Lammaites to get their news, fun and entertainment! Maybe, someday, I might even transform this into a little free printed newsletter, similar but smaller than B.C., Town Crier or my favourite, HK Magazine... |

Check out http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/25.htm for a heads-up of a work in progress. Another 1-2 days, I hope. Too much stuff and photo galleries this time, it takes more and more time each issue. The cover picture alone took one evening to assemble (every piece will be clickable to the story about it): <img src="http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/25/Cover-25c.jpg" border=1> 12 features this time:

Lamma Gung: happy with the content and format of the Zine, but it is perhaps a bit big and takes a while to download for this... er hem... 56k dial up user! Marcus: you might've forgotten to enable html and bbcode in your last message... |

Samson: Sorry, this is a Broadband e-zine, over 2MB. The vast majority (over 90%, I believe) of my local readers is on Broadband nowadays. I'd have to take out most of the content and photos to make it small and fast enough for dial-up users. I'm already splitting it into about 10 pages (separate photo galleries, for example) this issue, but the main body of the e-zine needs to stay large enough to cater for so much content and all the small stuff which is not worth a separate page and another download. Even for dial-up users it's a single long download. Get a coffee while it downloads. Once it's downloaded after a few minutes, the navigation will be extremely fast, jumping around in the e-zine, from topic to topic to all 12 features, as everything is downloaded already. The alternative is a lot of pages and a wait for every separate page to load. I'm reasoning that one long download is better than lots of small downloads, just for something specific like this e-zine format. |

Rejection won't spoil my day Left behind by technological advancement yet again! That's alright, even with all the latest gadgets and gizmo, one would still be left behind in a matter of minutes... Lamma-Gung {L_WROTE}: Get a coffee while it downloads.
Brilliant idea!! Honestly, it don't really bother me that greatly how long it takes to download, it's worth the time, patientce and coffee... |

Content is cool. Annoucements of upcoming events are sometimes after the event itself. Otherwise, good local magazine. & if I have a contribution to it, I will let you know. |

Samson {L_WROTE}: this... er hem... 56k dial up user
I've just renewed my So-net broadband. It's now $148/month for 3Mb speed. If you're online for more than an hour a day, it's cheaper than 56k, and doesn't block your phone line. |

Thanks for the info Alan - you're a champ Who are the other broadband service providers? Apart from the usual suspects like Netvigator, So-net, HK Broadband Network, Pacific Supernet... |

Samson {L_WROTE}: Who are the other broadband service providers? Apart from the usual suspects like Netvigator, So-net, HK Broadband Network, Pacific Supernet... As far as I know, only Netvigator and So-net are available here. (So-net uses PCCW circuits.) I don't know what Netvigator charges now, it was almost double So-net before, but there are always "special" offers. Also, if you want NOW broadband TV you have to use Netvigator (I assume, though I can't confirm, that it would work here).
It's pretty painless to use, if you don't have an Ethernet port a card costs about $50. They give you a DSL modem and cable and a CD installer (not needed for WinXP or OSX). Install a firewall (like the <a href="http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp">free version of ZoneAlarm</a>) <B>before</b> you go online with broadband. |

Yes, the 20+ TV channels of Broadband TV will be available ONLY to Netvigator customers, but not yet. I'm a Netvigator One customer (6Mb, 24 hour customer service, value-added free services) and I've tried to get Broadband TV. After FINALLY getting a hold of their sales, they had to admit that Lamma is not covered yet. Not enough bandwidth, because we're all (3 Broadband providers so far) still hanging on the same microwave link to HK Island. According to top-level sources in PCCW IMS, it'll be around mid-Dec till we'll get Broadband TV here, but only for Netvigator customers. I'll be one of the first to sign up, as Cable TV is about the only thing I'm missing (ex-addict of Discovery Channel) after moving here from HK Island less than 2 years ago! |

Thanks Alan and Gung for the info - u legends! But you posts do highlight my point of how people can easily get left behind by technology. You gotta have the right hardware and a fast enough computer to run right OS to be able to use broadband technology. And until you have broadband, you can't have broadband TV. And then you got to live on the right part of town for it. Such a great system of social stratification! Sorry to be such a whiner... All in all, I shall have a look around for available b/b services and see if I can join the rat race... |

Not really. It's just easier if you have more modern stuff as it's built in. But any old PC that can run any version of Windows 9x or better can use broadband (I'm pretty sure you can do it from DOS if you really want). Or of course you can use Linux. I also have an oldish Mac that took about 5 minutes to get on broadband. I don't often do massive down/uploads, though when I do it is nice. The main advantage to me is not worrying about my bill ticking up or missing phone calls every minute I'm online. |

I agree with Alan here, once again. My own setup is ancient and works pretty well on Broadband. Almost 5 year old PC, even much older large monitor and Windows 98 is more than enough to run Broadband, nothing additional necessary when installing it, as a cheap Ethernet card was built-in in many PCs even 5 years ago. Plus a combined, cheap color inkjet scanner/copier / printer / fax device, plus a few USB-connected devices, like a PDA, digicam, external hard disk / MO / CD burner (for backups) is all that's needed for creating & publishing the Lamma-zine. Which is what this topic was all about before we got distracted by Broadband issues... It's pretty straight-forward: if you want Broadband TV soon, sign up with Netvigator, only choice. For cheap broadband, go with So-Net. Easy. |

We are running Netvgator broadband on a 4.5 year old G3 Mac running OS8.6 (also about 4 years old) without any problems. The SW access to some secure applications suffers because of lack of support. But that is a different story & usally the service providers (Diners, Citybank, HSBC, ...) are to blame for this. |

| Post subject: | My Last Post On Broadband Issues... |
You're right, Lamma Gung - this topic is supposed to be about the Lamma-Zine and I derailed it. Very sorry. You did also mention that there are currently 3 internet services providers sharing the micro link for broadband services to Lamma. Alan, on the other hand, has mentioned Netvigator and So-Net. Please may I ask who's the third? And that's it. No more posts about broadband stuff from me. May the discussion about Lamma-Zine resume!! |

At the Lamma.com.hk stall at the Lamma Fun Day where Lamma-Por and I sold printed products by Lammaites for charity, I asked people to give me suggestions on how to improve this website. Many of them were long-time viewers and even content contributors. But I got very little feedback besides "Umm, er, let me think about that for a while.......... No, it's great, I can't think of anything!" While this great feedback, there MUST be areas to improve upon, new features to be added, old ones modernised, ancient ones removed altogether, the loading speed enhanced, the design to be nicer, no? Life is about improving yourself, your capabilities, your relationships and your environment. Not improving is stagnation. How to improve this site? PLEASE TELL ME! |

Charge a fee for avatars (say $20) but let anyone pay to change anyone else's avatar, just imagine what Spinoza's would have looked like. |

Well, too late for that now, but let's start with changing your own avatar! Any suggestions for yaffle's new avatar? $20 is a bit much, especially as I've always created avatars for members for free which kept me quite busy in the early days of this forum. Who'd like a new one? Yaffle, you're right, I should promote this avatar-making more, especially to new members who might not be aware of it yet. But I'd prefer to keep it free of charge. Especially as I've just sold my first painting from my exhibition. Yay! |
