I'm a bit worried that something has gone astray ... for a few days I haven't been able to read the Lamma home/blog page. Something about 'www.compunicate.com' access timing out, so I end up with a blank page. The server doesn't respond to pings either. These forums work fine, but I sorely miss my regular fix of the blog!

I hope it was nothing I said! :D

I often get the opposite.
Probably because the blog is at compunicate.com, hosted in HK, while lamma.com.hk is hosted in Nevada, showing that the TLDs tell you nothing about a site these days.

Anyway, try <a href="http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/includes_news.html">loading the blog directly as this</a>, not framed by the lamma site.

Nope, doesn't work. It seems I can't reach the HK server (compunicate.com). Other HK sites don't seem to have this problem, but it could be a routing issue between us. "gov.hk" works fine, which I assume is hosted in HK.

You're certainly right about Top Level Domains .. you never know where a site is physically located despite it's URL. That's the wonderful thing about the Internet ... there are no borders (well, almost).

Chuck, you're getting me worried here.

Yes, the blog and all Lamma-zine Calendar/Galleries/magazine/Links is hosted on my own HK-based server, linked into the Nevada-based Lamma.com.hk server, for historic and commercial reasons.

Also, it maximise the downloading speed for the often quite huge Lamma-zine-related pages for the majority of my HK-based readers. Not for you though, Chuck, Sorry.
As the home/blog page is a pretty complex mesh of HTML, CSS and JavaScript files from two servers, both need to be up and running for the home page to load.

But I heard from somebody on Lamma the other day who couldn't access the blog either for several days and couldn't even load a single, directly addressed ad web page on my own server. As it was a new advertiser, it was especially worrying.

Anybody else having problems accessing the home page of www.Lamma.com.hk and/or www.Compunicate.com ???

Alan {L_WROTE}:
The Internet traffic report has shown very poor connections for Asia (with the rest of the world) recently.

Now that's interesting ... I've noticed lately that my connections to Singapore and HK have been occasionally bad. In this case though, it has been 2 or 3 days of consistant timeouts for the Compunicate server while connections to other HK-based servers have been pretty good. My current thoughs are that it's a dead router or switch node somewhere in the path between the server and the HK backbone demarcation point, but that's pure conjecture at this point.

It would not be surprising if the primary circuits between Asia and North America become increasingly overloaded. I can see the day soon coming when we're going to have to switch to Version-6 IP addresses and much fatter pipes as Asia not only catches up with western Internet usage, but surpasses it by a significant margin.

Here's what I get by tracing from my PC:

which isn't fast, but okay.

One possibility is that many US admins seem to be racist rednecks, who have banned much or even all of Asia for spamming. Also note that 203.194.144.110 has a different reverse DNS searching from the US, which may create suspicion.
I've had problems sending email to several domains because of that. Check with your ISP.

No luck with my hosting tech support so far. They write:

"We can reach our server. we have setup a firewall and turn off the ping request and caused client cannot ping our server and also caused traceroute stop at ip 202.85.188.5.

I will check with our engineer today about the firewall setting and the problem maybe the fiewall blocking some incoming ip and caused your friend cannot reach our server!"

Alan {L_WROTE}:
Here's what I get by tracing from my PC............

I sent LG the results of a traceroute from my location, which showed results consistent with what his ISP claimed would happen (pings and traces stop before the end node).

BUT, at some time in the past 12 hours they fixed something, and I can now ping the HK server at 203.194.144.110, which puts a bit of a lie to their explanation of why pings/traces stopped before the end node. I have experienced this sort of behaviour several times ... the ISP has a problem, they bluff their way around it until something is magically fixed, but they never admit there was anything wrong so that performance penalties don't kick in.

The good news is that as of this morning the problem has gone away, and I can now read a backlog of items I have sorely missed. It's obvious the ISP has fixed something, but I'll bet we never find out what it was. Such is IT life. :?

We're back on course!

Compunicate.com ISP {L_WROTE}:
We check our firewall was blocking some ip if their ip not coming from True IP. We have change our firewall policy now and will accept all range of ip addresses...

Can you check one more time with your client and check does your client still have problem now ?

Sorry about this and I think this setting can solved the web problem!

Sounds like Alan's suspicion about "different reverse DNS searching" was right!
Many thanks to Chuck & Alan for good advice!

Nobody else mentioned having the same problem, except one friend on Lamma, so this problem was not too wide-spread, I hope.

I have been experiencing some problems with getting on both the forums and blog too, either loading very slowly or timeout. I haven't mentioned because the problem usually fixes itself after a short while...

Still, it surely is a hindrance on the progress of the Chinese forum update... Umm, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it anyway!!

Ooops! I was a bit too quick with the nasty comment, I apologise! I'll bet it was indeed a new firewall policy that prevented access if reverse lookup didn' t match the forward one. That's the case here, where I have many domain names all mapped to a set of three IP addresses, but where the reverse names are in my ISP's domain. This is becoming a common occurance as Internet security becomes more critical. I actually tip my hat to your ISP, although they did get a bit too paranoid at first.

Samson, you probably also see the long processing delay at the Forums site that I see here, where the server really gets bogged down whenever it has to check your access timestamps against all the forum categories. Add the occasional long propagation delay between you and the server and you can indeed get timeouts. I am quite close to the Forum web server and get great performance from it except for that long delay every time I click on the top-level "My Lamma Forums Forum Index" link. Not much can be done about that except throwing a lot more expensive hardware at it, and that's out of LG's hands.

Try using <a href="http://www.lamma.com.hk/forum/search.php?search_id=newposts">new posts</a> as your bookmark. Simpler and seems faster.

Why on earth didn't I think of that? It's much faster! Thanks Alan!
