The spectacular frog that sounds like a cow, known locally as fei por (fat woman) or otherwise as the Asiatic painted frog, began its beautiful serenade for the first time this year on April 13. It was very late compared to previous years. In 2008 and 2009, they called for the first time in March (don't have the exact dates). In 2010, they called for the first time on March 6. I guess the cool, dry weather has kept them underground longer this year.
Here is a picture of one, actually a fat man, bellowing away in Tai Peng Community Garden last night. I guess someone thought it melodic; there were eggs all over the pond surface this morning.
