I was just about to post this when I heard one. They are back, so get used to it, but a few days later than usual.

Another April has swung around - I guess we have two or three days left before the Indian cuckoos are back with that unvarying 4-note mantra. And when the first decent spring rains come, those Asian Painted Frogs are ready and waiting in their burrows to end months of aestivation and once again make for the nearest resonating drain pipe to do their nocturnal impressions of a herd of cows.

For people whose glass is half full: the earth spins to its ancient seasonal rhythms, animated by the unique sounds of its natural world.

For people whose glass is half empty: Oh no! I'm going to be kept awake by those pesky cuckoos and frogs making their detestable racket. Isn't the barking of the neighbours' dogs enough, ffs?

First heard yesterday, April 13th 2015. They are back in residence, so get used to it.

Yes, I heard one for the first time this morning over Po Way Yuen, heading for the Lamma interior as usual - they always head there first.

What does it sound like? I know that may be hard to describe!

We've been hearing a strange sound outside the house the last few days. Could be a bird, could be a pipe!

Could be an Asian Painted frog in a pipe doing an impression of a herd of cows - they are due about now too.

This is an Indian Koel - also from the cuckoo family. They are actually here all the year round, but just get into full song in spring. The male is all black with a red iris and whitish bill, while the female is barred black and brown

Some old threads just refuse to die! Yes, it's that time of year again, and very soon we will have that sound accompaniment all day every day (and night)
