Post subject:  lamma snakes photos ?

Hi!
I just saw a snake in the canopee in front of my window! I didn't kow they could climb so high in fact.
It was a grey snake with kind of black and white long stripes it seems, the part just behind the head being yellow-brown. Does somebody knows what it is?
And BTW do you know where I could find photos of the species I could meet on lamma? I already met a cobra, a bamboo, a small one with blach and white rings, is this a terapin? a big one (about 3 meters) probably pythoon... I am a bit scared by these cold friends, specially because I don't know them and where and when to find them. I try to avoid small tracks in the forest during summertime... Do they have predators on the island? what about the birds? falcons? thank's for your lights!

I got this book some time ago to identify all the local wildlife:

{L_IMAGE}

A Colour Guide to Hong Kong Animals
Hill, D.S. and Philips, K.

Don't know if it's still in print.
Could ask at the major bookshops.

HKU has this guide online: Reptiles of Hong Kong

Your snake sounds like a Copperhead Racer.
{L_QUOTE}:
Coelognathus radiatus
Copperhead Racer

Total length Average 150 cm, can reach 210 cm.
Description Back brownish, yellowish or greyish, with 4 black stripes which broken into streaks on the neck.
Stripes distinct on the anterior half of the body, fade and disappear further down.
Head with black collar, 3 black lines radiate from behind each eye.
Ventrals greyish; Scales weakly keeled.
Habitat Prefer open, dry, hilly, rocky habitat in grassland and shrubland.
Seldom in high mountain and broad-leaf woodland.
Absent from the interior of dense forest.
Behaviour Diurnal. Active and fast-moving snake.
Vicious and aggressive.
When threatened, inflates the neck to show bluish skin, bend the anterior half of body into loops and mouth widely open.
Will strike and bites when handled.

Anyway, snakes don't hunt people. As long as you don't step on them they will just slither away.
I've never been bitten here in 20 years and walk in the countryside a lot.

But have been bitten many times by centipedes.

{L_QUOTE}:
Danger to humans: This snake is aggressive when threatened and is large enough to inflict some damage with its bite. A recent study has found that it produces some venom, quite similar to the venom of cobras. However, it only produces a small amount of venom and does not have venom-injecting fangs, so effects in humans are limited to redness and mild swelling at worst.

That was definitely a copper head racer I saw, but I was surprised to hear that they have venom and are aggressive. I somehow thought they were harmless, so probably did not treat it with sufficient respect. I'm not an expert on distinguishing the venomous from the non-venomous, so tend to err on the side of caution.

The site that I quoted is about Thai snakes, supposedly the same species.
Actually most references say non-venomous, but that said they had some, but not dangerous.

Maybe the Bangkok variety is more bad tempered than the local laid back species.
I've only ever seen them quickly sliding across a path or away into the scrub.
