Don't think the heron was the Black capped night heron, but I will try and get a photo.

Photo of the Crested Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus).
Will try and improve on the photo later.

Bulbuls are generally medium sized, self confident perching birds, noisy, gregarious, and usually in pairs or small groups.

Description: About 8" (20 cm). Grayish above, whitish below, with long conspicuous black crest, red cheek patch, white cheeks and throat, with a black moustachial stripe, white-tipped tail and orange red vent.

Habitat: Residential areas, parks, and gardens, as well as quiet woodland

Nesting: 2-4 pinkish-white eggs, spotted with reddish brown, in a cup of dead leaves and grass that is lined with fine roots and hair and placed in a bush or small tree.

Breeding: April to June

Habits: Native to Southeast Asia and resident in South China

Diet: Insects, soft berries and fruits

Voice: Various chattering notes; a whistled queekey!

Threats: None really percieved as they are common and widespread on Lamma

Anyone noticed this strange humming bird hovering over the vegetable patches?

Yes..............., but I believe the main reason for the hum is because it's hanging out in a broccoli patch

Anybody (Zep / Hilda) know what this bird is - some kind of Kite/Hawk? Is probably about 15-18" from beak to tail tip.

A female Koel, perhaps?
The males are all-black, I believe.

Yes, the red eyes are the giveaway!

Have a look at Zep's Bird of the Month - March 2004 with photos of male and female Koels.

bbChris calls them "orgasm birds" for their characteristic calls starting in late March.

"Reloaded"
Like this one perhaps?
"the male Common Koel is easily identified by its entirely glossy black plumage, tinged with blue and green, and striking red eye"
10 points to L-B towards the bottle of magnificent red wine.
