This is a Hwamei (Garrulax canorus). It is actually a kind of laughing thrush, and is very much prized by the cage bird fraternity for its beautiful song. Why the strange name? It comes from the Chinese
畫眉
pronounced wa mei in Cantonese and meaning painted eyebrow.

I came back later to the same spot and saw it in a better light - it's definitely a violet whistling thrush.

Yes, at last! It's the secretive and reclusive violet whistling thrush (Myophonus caerulus), another one very difficult to get a picture of (but a pretty dull specimen compared to my brightly coloured individual up the page).

OK, I confess, the April Fool jest can be revealed. I took your picture of a Crested Mynah (Acridotheres cristatellus) and coloured it purple.
