No photos, but am seeing a lot of bird life around my little "farm"... drongos, crested mynahs, Waterhen, Starlings, Long-tailed Shrike... coupla weeks ago even had some sort of Tern flying over regularly at 09:00 every day... think the Indain Cuckoo has finally moved on

Latest shot by master wildlife photographer Howard Sheard of the HK School of Photography. He writes:

"Sometimes they come too close to fit everything in the frame.
Don't think I could have zoomed fast enough. It appeared in a gap through the trees and was gone. My first shot missed focus and this was the second and last. It did swing around again but further away, the 560mm would have been handy there."

Geoff Smith: "And that was the last we heard of Howard..."

Tracey Sheard: "He's alive and kicking, Geoff !!! Albeit a little slowly..."

Quite a few hair-crested drongos arriving these days. I had seven in the trees near my rooftop this morning

Just seen a female Plumbeous Redstart near the "stream" next to the clinic.

Went home to get my camera and came back without the memory card in it so no photo unfortunately.

Great! I've sometimes wondered if any would make it to Lamma, but never seen on here so far. Yes, a picture would be great (not saying I don't believe you, you understand...)

Hahaha, I can show you phone camera pics that I'd be embarrassed to post but I think would be enough to confirm due to the distinctive white tail flick.
Interestingly when my wife came home she very accurately described a hoopoe to me in the valley by the hill to tai peng so there's something else I want to see now.

The phone pics sound useful - they are valued by birdwatchers as 'record shots' i.e. it is clearly understood that due to the circumstances the photo is not a good one but it is still nevertheless very useful as a record of what was seen. Record shots of rare species are always welcome

Here's a record shot of my own. Right at the top end of the 30x digital zoom on my compact but there is no doubt about its identity

Good to get a shot of the Hoopoe.

I've seen it twice now feeding on the ground in the patch of grass on the left as you walk towards the village coming down the hill from Tai Peng. Opposite where they have started building (both times near the basket on its side).

I should start carrying a camera - my phone can't cut it

From Andy Maluche:

"A large flock of the common Forest Bottle group together for their annual mating ritual.
It is interesting to see the large number of juveniles, recognisable through their dark green color.
Lamma island, Hong Kong."
