Nice photos and nice birds - one or two up in Tai Peng too. Also a Cihnese Goshawk perhed nt he community garden this morning, keeping and eye on the frogs they feed on on their passage through to China.

These pictures are phenomenal - firstly it's hard to get a shot of a flying bird at the best of times, and secondly these birds usually only emerge when it is almost dark and useless for photography.

The call of the savannah nightjar - the harsh "schweeep" sound in the fading light as it searches for insect prey - is one of the evocative sounds of spring and summer on Lamma.

Great stuff, Harry - at last we have a picture of a hoopoe on Lamma on the forum. A number of people have indicated seeing this elusive bird once or twice without knowing what it is. Its bizarre Alice-in-wonderland appearance makes it hard to ignore.

The oriental turtle doves are early visitors - nice to see them back

I love hoopoes, growing up with them in the rural countryside of Switzerland where they're not uncommon. We called them "Wiedehopf" (literally meaning brush head). This sighting makes me feel even more at home on Lamma....

Can't resist posting a couple more hoope photos - not taken on Lamma but in my brother's place in the south of France. Here wer were treated to up to three individuals feasting on some beetle larvae on the lawn. Why are they called brush-head in German? The second reocrd shot shows the erectile crest.
