According to my in-house Chinese culture expert, Lamma-Por, it's actually honey in the middle. She grew up with this snack as well and remembers it fondly from her childhood.

I've tried it from that smart lady, on Lamma-Por's recommendation. I can't tell what the fuss is all about, it's kind of a weird, sticky, crumbly, salty snack. You probably have to grow up with it to really like it. Something as weird as peanut-butter-jelly sandwiches, marmite or even deep-fried Mars bars can probably only be appreciated if you've had them as a child, as they seem and taste horrible to everybody else.

What about the guy who sells curry fishballs and only has a vocabulary of "ga lai yue dan" repeated over and over again?

Well, the Deli Lamma Lan Kwai Fong actually has some very nice set lunches, 5 daily changing sets, including soup or salad and soft drink/tea/coffee, all for just $70, a great deal in that neighbourhood.

Sets like these would be pretty welcome in the Yung Shue Wan rest. as well and save guests quite some money at lunch. So their LKF place is actually much cheaper than the Lamma one, at least at lunchtime.

Email from Tam the Baker, ex-Lammaite and ex-baker of the Village Bakery:

"I have been reading the reviews on the bakery and i do apologise to everyone on behalf of Charlie and the sales staff and myself, but it is not their fault nor mine that the quality has dropped from the good old days.

I am no longer allowed to take any part in the endeavour because of the good old HK Immigration laws and this is very upsetting as Charlie financed my dream of setting up and running a bakery producing excellent quality baked goods for the people of Lamma.

Now that i am no longer allowed to take any part it is very near impossible to find and hire staff with the skills needed to produce these goods.

So poor Charlie has had to do with what staff and skills he can find locally. And having very little knowledge of the industry himself he is in a bit of a pickle, so he requires as much support as possible from the community on Lamma.

The bakery will never be ready because he just can't find the skills and when he does the HK Immigration refuse their visas. So go ahead and do a review yourself and give him some support!

Yours,
TAM the Baker"

Good news about the Village Bakery:

Prafull of the Deli Lamma has taken over on May 1 and will be making numerous improvements to this formerly fine place. It has been abandoned by many Lammaites (including myself), becoming just another "normal" HK bakery, pleasing mostly the soft/light/sweet bread lovers, plus a few cakes/pastries at very high prices, IMHO.

Prafull is encouraging feedback and wishes from Lammaites. How could the Village Bakery be improved and what should they offer to attract more customers, like yourself?

A professional, restaurant-quality coffee machine has been announced already.
