I have personal affection on this restaurant because 2 years ago I had the wedding reception held here. A yacht (more like a huge size sampan) was organised to pick up the guests from Central City Hall after our wedding registration. Half of the guests threw up during the rocky boat trip, including my dad almost passing out! The restaurant gives a tropical feeling, somthing that you can easily find in Thailand, but quite unique in Hong Kong. It's surreal, but yet so real. I visited Cococabana a couple of weeks ago. It's older, and the new pale yellow paint makes the place looking so much older, and even a little run down. The people there also changed, but what doesn't change in Hong Kong??? It's a pity the restaurant looks so much like a stranger to me, but my affection is still with it! Good food, excellent environment and prohibitively expensive menu. Bring a bit more cash, but we work to live, right?

Webdog rating: Goood!

You can't get there from Central. There's only a ferry communting Mo Tat Wan - Aberdeen - Sok Kwu Wan. You may also walk there from Sok Kwu Wan (a good 30 minutes walk).

There's nothing good about a walk in the dark from Mo Tat Wan to Sok Kwu Wan and then on to YSW in the dark! I've heard they are doing a good deal for christmas get-togethers but, again, are they going to run a boat/sampan via YSW if there is a demand. Any comment from the management on the xmas fare?

This place is terrible. A dark and dirty flea pit of a place with very little customers. Went once in the summer totally overpriced and under cooked. Dreadful place.

First post in two years in this topic!

The Cococabana has totally changed during this time, thanks to new owner, manager and chef Jean Paul Gauci taking over this place about 15 months ago and transforming it into THE best non-Chinese restaurant on all of Lamma, IMHO (in my humble opinion).

Have a look at the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/30.htm#1">Lamma-zine story</a> and pictures of a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.compunicate.com/Lamma-zine/includes_news.html#Dec5">recent birthday party</a> we celebrated in there. A highly recommended place, just one ferry stop or a 30 minutes walk from Sok Kwu Wan.

By the way, this is message #13,000 in these forums...

They live from the junk-in crowd almost exclusively. We and 3 other people were the only locals amongst the 50+ crowd. There was another birthday party, all very well-dressed, young, female, urbane professionals, one of them showing off her oh-so-cute pink iPod Mini. Plus a junk party of 35 people celebrating Thanksgiving.

They're extensively advertising in the SCMP and other publications with a large yuppie readership. Plus in the Lamma-zine, with a sizable yuppie readership (but if you call ANY of them a yuppie they'll never talk to you again! ).

There's a $220 set menu, to be shared among at least 4 people, but the game dishes are around $250 per plate! My photos are showing the current, seasonal game set menu at $420 (2 appetizers, 3 game dishes from the game menu, dessert sampler, Sancerre dessert wine, coffee). Don't even think about getting into the (excellent) wine list if you're on a budget. We avoided it.

It's not just the best non-Chinese restaurant on Lamma, it's also the most expensive. I blew my Lamma-zine advertising barter with them for a year in this single meal and we still had to pay cash for the mini cake. Quality has its prize, Noblesse Oblige; but it was worth it for such a memorable meal for a special occasion.

Dear Alan, oh King of Nitpickers,

I'm well aware of the meaning of "Noblesse Oblige", despite the recent misleading ad campaigns. After 8+ years of French lessons in school, it would be sad if I'd forgotten all of it, instead of just most of it.

I used this quote in jest, in the way that the rich who can afford to eat at Cococabana actually supported the birthday lunch of poor me, covered by advertising barter that they paid for indirecty via their own meals.
Noblesse Oblige, even though they might not have felt obligated to support me in any way and didn't even know about it.

Before I get yellow-carded (again!), "King of Nitpickers" is actually kind of a compliment, as editors like you and me are actually paid to be nitpickers and to be extremely detail-minded. I'm a nitpicker myself sometimes (OK, frequently) and proud of it!..

The voting poll for this restaurant has been reset. The poll has been running for almost two years and almost all votes were cast before the present owner took over a bit more than a 1 year ago. This is unfair and doesn't reflect the current status and quality of the restaurant.

Quite a large number of Lamma restaurants have changed ownership, management, cooks, decoration or whatever since voting began for all of them almost two years ago.

All restaurant polls will be reset in the next few weeks (very time-consuming as all polls have to be deleted individually and then new polls set up individually as well, adding each voting option for each restaurant one by one) and new rankings announced in due time.

Do they do a discount on birthday cakes that mention "Happy Birthday Guy"?

They might!

But the discussion about this topic should continue in this topic:
Gung's birthday cake
