Valentine's Day menus are coming in. First one, a yearly favourite among YSW restaurants:

Restaurant review from Cristobal de Lamma, text & pictures. Many thanks!
Want to publish your own reviews on this Lamma community site? Contact me!

"After several weeks of eating out at various restaurants in Yung Shue Wan, I am forced to accept the new reality of what is available. As the old days are "gone" and not to return, I have to adapt.
Thus I will adjust my focus slightly, by being more flexible with my budget.
Though still looking for quality, value, quantity and satisfaction.

Prime has been on the Main street of Lamma for quite a while.
I have gone there several times since it has opened, and did not want to do a review until now.
As it was a new restaurant, it is always good to wait until everything and everyone gets settled in.
I do believe that the original idea behind Prime was to make it the #1 venue in the village.
Great idea, but not so easy to execute well.

As I had finished a small project, I decided to treat myself and try the new menu at Prime.
After minimal thought, I ordered the hummus with crudites ($25 HKD), and the Steak and Guinness Pie ($110HKD).
I received the hummus and first taste reaction was an explosion of garlic. Good, but very intense.
I recommend asking for the normal hummus rather than the anti-vampire, though I would re-order the anti-vampire version.

Steak and Guinness Pie arrived with mashed potatoes and green peas.
Tried the green peas and not my style.
Mashed potatoes were creamy and nice. I liked them.
I am not an expert on pies, but the size was good, pastry done well, and after lifting the lid, I counted about 8 pieces of meat.
Meat was good, well cooked and flavoured, of a better quality than I expected.
I then made small balls of potato and rolled them in the gravy inside the pie. Mashed potatoes just got better!

Verdict: definitely a success and satisfied with my meal.
Quality and value: overall, yes.
Repeat: Already have. (Second version of hummus was nice. I prefer the stronger garlic version)

I think that Prime's seaview seating area is the best in the village. I really like the seaview seating there.
Staff are good and attentive, and I do like the bar section facing Main Street.
If they can consistently deliver good meals at reasonable prices, I do think that they might eventually reach the goal
of being the #1 venue in the village.
I hope they don't drop the ball."

Any more Valentine's Day menus?

Most expensive one I've seen so far is $888/couple in Lamma Grill, but it includes an extra "Five cheese platter and port"!
We might be tempted if there'd be some Swiss cheeses?

More and more YSW restaurants seem to open every day of the Lunar New Year holidays, for example Andy's Seafood, still our long-time favourite Chin. restaurant in YSW!

A great initiative from the Lamma Fun Day charity, Children Welfare Scheme, supported by one of our favourite meeting places, hangouts and people watching spots:

Valentine's Day specials are usually limited to a single day.

But we've just heard from Jing Jing's master chef Marlon yesterday (see below) that they'll be offering this menu above from tomorrow, Friday, Feb 13, till Monday evening. Almost a Valentine's Week not just a Valentine's Day!

Lamma-Por and I will certainly find a day in our busybusy weekend schedules to enjoy this fine menu. And the Waterfront's...

But who else has a Valentine's Day Special Menu, not featured in this forum yet? Any of the Vegetarian places, cafes, Thai, Turkish, Chinese, etc. restaurants??

Just came across one more Valentine's Day menu. Our search for the most expensive and extensive Valentine's Day menu is over: Concerto Inn wins!

But it's also the largest and most impressive menu, so why not go over to Hung Shing Yeh beach tomorrow with your Significant Other, swim or sunbathe at the public beach just outside Concerto before sunset and enjoy the dinner, plus maybe a room for the night...

They've got Valentine's Day room packages and other specials:
http://www.concertoinn.com.hk/packages/content/87

Plus a new "Spring Holiday A La Carte Menu"

One more menu, from The Bay restaurant in Mo Tat Wan.

It's on the beach just off the ferry pier, one stop from Sok Kwu Wan or Aberdeen.
$468/person, excluding service charge. In Chinese only, but here's a quick translation (Thank you, Charlie!):

Pumpkin Scallop Cream soup
Goose liver w/black vinegar

Caesar salad

Main dish (pick one):

A. Baked Cheese Boston Lobster
B. Angus Rib-Eye Steak w/red wine sauce
C. Rack of New Zealand Lamb + Swiss potatoes
D. Prawn + Salmon + French bean

Dessert:
Creme Brulee (French sugar pudding)
Coffee or Tea

How to avoid the big crowds and big expense of a regular Valentine's Day dinner, besides avoiding going out at all?

Easy! Just have your Valentine's Day set dinner on Lamma at a much lower price than in town; and have it on a later date in a nice place that still has the Valentine's Day menu running!

For example: Jing Jing on YSW Main Street, offering the special set menu for lovers from Fri-Mon, Feb 13-16.

That's what Lamma-Por and I did, see below! We were the only dinner guests early on a Monday evening in Jing Jing, Feb 16, so we got quick but relaxed service; plus the full attention of Joyce and Marlon the Master Chef coming over for chats after our absolutely delicious and visually beautiful dinner!

With the money you've saved ($388 for two, see menu above), you could buy a nicer present or even avoid buying it all together ("Too late now!", but this might only work and be excusable if you've been together for almost half of our lives, like us.)

P.S. This is also the same place that gave us our very first Souffle on the Ferry experience!
You didn't know you can get freshly made souffle on the ferry?

We were late to catch our usual 8pm ferry home, so we got the souffle to go in its original ceramic pot, enjoying it just a few minutes later still warm on the ferry, a first for us! Just one more reason why we still love living here, the community and the people... and Marlon's new, cloud-like souffles!

I washed the pot and returned it the next-next day, of course.

Our first home delivery from a YSW restaurant to our Pak Kok home!

The Waterfront's set dinner delivered today by Jenni's brand-new delivery service Can't Get Jack (Facebook page).

It was really delicious, still warm, well packed and delivered exactly on time by bike, with a smile and chat. The Waterfront even added on the salad for free to the already much-larger-than-normal portion! Enough left for my lunch tomorrow!

For details on how to get your food (or almost anything up to 12kg) delivered on North Lamma, or how to start making money by doing occasional deliveries for Can't Get Jack, contact Can't Get Jack, or SMS/WhatsApp/call to 5662 3552.

So how does it work?
If I want a my takeaway delivered, do I call the restaurant and make my order and then call CGJ with an estimate of the pickup time, or does the restaurant call CGJ when it is ready? How much notice does CGJ need? I.e. if it only takes 20 mins for the order to be ready, is that enough notice for CGJ?
When it is delivered do I pay CGJ for the order + delivery fee?
What is the delivery fee (to Tai Peng for example?)
Hours, how late does CGJ operate?
questions, questions, logisitics !
Great idea, I really hope this takes off.
By the way Jenni, there is a fantastic Android App called MyMapHK that lists every house number and shows every building on Lamma. I am pretty sure it pulls all of its data out of the HK Gov Mapping service database. It is fantastic and would be really useful for this service.

New address for the Facebook Business Page:

Can't Get Jack
or Text/WhatsApp 5662 3552.

Ready to make our second order... We Lammaites living in more remote areas without a single restaurant or real shop could get used to this.

No rain delivery surcharge for the time being, very important in the next few weeks!

Considering to sign up as one of Jenni's "Go-Getters" delivery boys and girls. Minimum age 13,
I might qualify as there's no maximum age yet, fortunately!
Lamma-Gung the Go-Getter has a nice ring to it and sounds more fun than visiting a gym.
