How to avoid the big crowds and big expense of a regular Valentine's Day dinner, besides avoiding going out at all?

Easy! Just have your Valentine's Day set dinner on Lamma at a much lower price than in town; and have it on a later date in a nice place that still has the Valentine's Day menu running!

For example: Jing Jing on YSW Main Street, offering the special set menu for lovers from Fri-Mon, Feb 13-16.

That's what Lamma-Por and I did, see below! We were the only dinner guests early on a Monday evening in Jing Jing, Feb 16, so we got quick but relaxed service; plus the full attention of Joyce and Marlon the Master Chef coming over for chats after our absolutely delicious and visually beautiful dinner!

With the money you've saved ($388 for two, see menu above), you could buy a nicer present or even avoid buying it all together ("Too late now!", but this might only work and be excusable if you've been together for almost half of our lives, like us.)

P.S. This is also the same place that gave us our very first Souffle on the Ferry experience!
You didn't know you can get freshly made souffle on the ferry?

We were late to catch our usual 8pm ferry home, so we got the souffle to go in its original ceramic pot, enjoying it just a few minutes later still warm on the ferry, a first for us! Just one more reason why we still love living here, the community and the people... and Marlon's new, cloud-like souffles!

I washed the pot and returned it the next-next day, of course.

Our first home delivery from a YSW restaurant to our Pak Kok home!

The Waterfront's set dinner delivered today by Jenni's brand-new delivery service Can't Get Jack (Facebook page).

It was really delicious, still warm, well packed and delivered exactly on time by bike, with a smile and chat. The Waterfront even added on the salad for free to the already much-larger-than-normal portion! Enough left for my lunch tomorrow!

For details on how to get your food (or almost anything up to 12kg) delivered on North Lamma, or how to start making money by doing occasional deliveries for Can't Get Jack, contact Can't Get Jack, or SMS/WhatsApp/call to 5662 3552.

So how does it work?
If I want a my takeaway delivered, do I call the restaurant and make my order and then call CGJ with an estimate of the pickup time, or does the restaurant call CGJ when it is ready? How much notice does CGJ need? I.e. if it only takes 20 mins for the order to be ready, is that enough notice for CGJ?
When it is delivered do I pay CGJ for the order + delivery fee?
What is the delivery fee (to Tai Peng for example?)
Hours, how late does CGJ operate?
questions, questions, logisitics !
Great idea, I really hope this takes off.
By the way Jenni, there is a fantastic Android App called MyMapHK that lists every house number and shows every building on Lamma. I am pretty sure it pulls all of its data out of the HK Gov Mapping service database. It is fantastic and would be really useful for this service.

New address for the Facebook Business Page:

Can't Get Jack
or Text/WhatsApp 5662 3552.

Ready to make our second order... We Lammaites living in more remote areas without a single restaurant or real shop could get used to this.

No rain delivery surcharge for the time being, very important in the next few weeks!

Considering to sign up as one of Jenni's "Go-Getters" delivery boys and girls. Minimum age 13,
I might qualify as there's no maximum age yet, fortunately!
Lamma-Gung the Go-Getter has a nice ring to it and sounds more fun than visiting a gym.

Jenni writes:

"Dear lovely Lamma people - in my desperate quest to launch Can't Get Jack with haste and hiccups, it now appears that Facebook did not believe that Mrs. Jack, Can't Get, was not an authentic person, and right they were. For that reason, my old FB account named Can't Get Jack was re-named to the more authentic name of Jenni Higgins (moi). So, in order to use Facebook for the purposes of business, we have now gone through the correct channels and created a Facebook Business Page called surprisingly Can't Get Jack. So not only can one not get Jack, it also appears one cannot start Jack without playing by the rules.

Please re-LIKE my new FB business page, you might have to search for us.

The 100th LIKE will get a free delivery!! [63 Likes as of this morning]

We're also looking for Go-Getters, contact me if you're interested. Go-getters must be over 13 years old - perfect as a teenagers first job"

A new place that has been open for just a few months; but only on weekend and holidays. It's so low-key that even I hadn't heard about it before, despite keeping track of the entire eating/drinking scene on Lamma.

Jon Dok (or Jondok, their blackboards below have two spellings) takeaway in the centre of Sha Po Old Village. Here's their outdoors blackboard. I can highly recommend their version of the famous Filipino Halo-Halo iced slurpee! So many healthy and tasty ingredients in one cup, it's a complete $18 meal for people with tiny stomachs, like myself.

Jon Dok is located just before the well-known, 1-floor Red House, my former stopover to pick up a Halo-Halo from the former Filipino shop in there. Halo-Halo Myrna, where are you these days???

"Can't Get Jack just wants to SHOUT about what we've been up to.

Since we launched in March 2015 we have 13 members of our community as Go-Getters (big kiss, without you we'd get nothing done!)
We have 16 members registered who can benefit at the drop of a hat from deliveries to their home or wherever they are in North Lamma (big kisses to you too! Literally without you we'd have nothing to do all day!)
The most exciting news to report is our number of deliveries undertaken! We have now delivered a happy 10 deliveries to our wonderful members, averaging 4 per month and roughly 1 per week!

This is great news and a lovely start - but you can see, we have room to DO MORE!

And so, if you've used us before, please continue to do so and tell your friends and neighbours!
If you'd like more information on how to place an order, please get in touch! We are just a phone call away and happy to answer any query.

Our goal is to get as many people as possible to sign up as Go-Getters - if the request comes from your neighbor, I'm sure most of you would be happy to carry supper to them if you're passing that way anyway. Can't Get Jack's aim is to promote and prove that Lamma is the best community out there!"

Next exhibition in Banyan Bay Cafe, featuring mostly (all?) off-Lammaites for the first time, all through the summer.

Is Cath's Bar becoming Lamma's only permanent gallery, open for artists on and off Lamma? Let's hope so!

Still running till this Monday, June 22, Roz Keep's yearly, beautiful and cheerful exhibition of artwork from her Lamma children art classes. Have a look!

Opening night yesterday, Jun 23, running till Aug 23.

More info submitted directly from Lammaite Jonnet of Christian Action:

"It’s a joint effort by British Council HK and our charity, Christian Action Centre for Refugees to showcase art work created by HK-based refugees. We have been partnering with British Council for over 6 years now. Offering language programmes and more recently, language through art. The art teacher, Ms. Sally Marks also lives on Lamma hence the idea of doing it on Lamma. It seems Lamma is trending. We have also created a FB event).

I have also attached here some info about our centre, being the only drop-in centre for refugees in HK since 2004."

Some bars and restaurants are extending their opening hours to cope with the summer influx of visitors:

"Fa Fa House summer opening hours are as follows:

Wed to Sat 11am - 6pm
Sun 12:30 - 6pm"

If you visit some places just a little away from Main Street, like LaLa mama, Beer Garden or Waterfront, even on a weekend not many tourists, great places to hide and have a great time with your friends!
