The last of the 3 Life Café locations in Central (Wanchai and Discovery Bay closed earlier) closed down permanently a few days ago.

SCMP story, with an interview of Bobsy, one of the founders who's just opened another MANA! location:
MANA! Café, Books Brunch & Coffee, 8 Tai On Terrace. Pound Lane, Poho, Sheung Wan.

He started Bookworm Café on Lamma Island in 1997 and there are numerous stories on his adventures on this website (Search for "Bobsy" or "Life Cafe" at the top of the home page).

Life Café was a Lamma-zine barter advertiser in the early days, helping to keep this fledgling, struggling website alive. Many thanks and good memories of great lunches in there!

Death knell for Life Cafe, where Hong Kong’s organic health food revolution began.

Restaurant that’s latest to fall victim to rent squeeze opened by the Mid-Levels escalator soon after Sars outbreak and was first in Hong Kong to serve quinoa and gluten-free food, says founder; for years it was a hangout for the yoga crowd, and a film and music venue too.

Vegetarian and vegan restaurant Life Café on Shelley Street is the latest victim of high rents and will close its doors this Saturday after over a decade in business. Its sister locations in Discovery Bay and Wan Chai having already closed, it will be the end of Life Café as a brand and a concept.

For founder Bobsy Gaia, the restaurant was a pioneer in offering quality healthy organic food to people starving for an alternative to fast food or places that didn’t break the bank.

Although he left Life Café in 2009 to focus on Mana!, which he later opened in Wellington Street, Central, Gaia has fond memories of the Soho restaurant, particularly its humble beginnings.

Bobsy Gaia has fond memories of Life Cafe, which he left in 2009 to open Mana! nearby.
He started Bookworm Café on Lamma Island in 1997, and it soon became the place for international healthy organic fare. Customers encouraged Gaia to open in Central, but it took him a few years to not only find the necessary capital, but also the right spot.

“We were looking at locations towards the end of [the] Sars] outbreak and the sentiment back then was this desperation for healthy food was so strong,” recalls Gaia. “When we opened, I had a three-storey banner that read, ‘Finally! An organic health café in Hong Kong’ and from day one we had queues. At the time there was nowhere else to eat healthy and organic.”

Life, which later became Life Café, introduced many firsts to Hong Kong, Gaia says, including gluten-free food, quinoa and a salad bar concept.

The restaurant did more than serve food; it was a communal spot for social events, like farmer’s markets on the rooftop, live bands, and screenings of films. There was a community board for people to put up notices; Gaia even had a library featuring books on healthy food.

“We were the hub for the yoga community who before then didn’t have anywhere to eat. We had celebrities like Sting and Andre 3000 eat at Life Café, and yoga celebrities like David Life and Sharon Gannon,” Gaia says.

Perhaps his fondest memory is of the café somehow being able to cram a six-piece reggae band complete with steel drums into the narrow space around 2006.

With Life Café about to close, Gaia has been trying to have a meal there every day and reminiscing about the success of the place, which did not depend on alcohol to make the rent for 11 years.

“There were six different restaurants there before us and people said that space was jinxed,” he says. “But for us it was the exact opposite.”

It's kind of a nickname, like Lamma-Gung. Bobsy is his real first name, I think. Surname is Jureidini, from his Lebanese father.

The SCMP didn't use my nickname only when interviewing me, despite their verbal promises and written confirmations, but they seem happy to accommodate Bobsy Gaia, the local "celebrity"...

...and they publish Facebook posts as printed Letters to the Editors with the full name, without any permission or even asking the writers first, upsetting them. Very dubious journalistic ethics in general...

Bombay just got a pretty nice and active Facebook page, like many of the non-Chinese YSW restaurants who have abandoned their website or never set one up in the first place.

Post your comments, pictures and review!

https://www.facebook.com/bombaybarrestaurant/

The comments in the Lamma Residents group are very positive so far, "10 out of 10":

Christmas/NY Special in Bombay.
I tried the first two dishes the other day and they were delicious, especially the fruity naan, a first for me!

Submitted by Bombay Bar & Grill.

We've tried their set dinner for two the other day and it was really good and fantastic value, especially as we had quite some leftovers to take home!

I've got to try one of their several set lunches very soon. All set lunches are below $100, appetisers and soft drink included; not easy to find these days in Yung Shue Wan...

New takeaway in Yung Shue Wan with very homely Cantonese food.

No location, home-cooked, call in advance, pick up anywhere close to YSW Main Street, daily changing menus, great prices. Check Facebook:

What's new in the restaurant scene on Lamma?

Lamma Hilton on the Sok Kwu Wan main strip has recently closed down for good, according to our SKW Correspondent.

Canaan Kitchen in Yung Shue Wan is up and running, cooking delicious home-made Cantonese food from Wed-Sat, take away anywhere along YSW Main Street. I didn't preorder, but it was ready for takeaway within 5 minutes.
Lamma-Por (HK-Cantonese) approves and so do I! Very reasonable prices and daily changing 3 menu options. Check out their Facebook page.

Meeting our new Police Chief, Ms. Solid Kwan, and her group of Italian friends visiting HK by sheer coincidence in Bombay Rest. last Saturday, I asked her for a short review. Her friends all loved it, she said. She WhatsApped:

"As a curry lover, I found Bombay is more yummy than those in town.
Pleasant environment with reasonable price is value for money!
I hope the quality can be maintained in a positive way!!"

Lamma Grill events in Feb., from their nice, new website:
http://www.lammagrill.com/#events

Plus another Quiz Night in The Waterfront!

What else is new? Any Lamma bar or restaurant, let us know and we'll tell Lammaites here, in the Lamma-zine and in various places on Facebook, of course!

Lamma Community Market this afternoon starting at 3pm, spaces outdoors and indoors still available. Contact Lamma Grill at 2982 1447. More Lamma Grill events...

One fun foodie experience we've just experienced on Lamma was ordering Canaan Kitchen takeaway from the ferry from Central and picking it up when arriving, during the 5-minute switch-over to the Pak Kok Ferry!
This might become very popular for commuters from Central or Aberdeen. A well-known, hotel-trained Cantonese chef is cooking from prepared ingredients, right after your order by phone (9739 7816), so the food is ready, freshly cooked and ready within a few minutes.

You arrive at the YSW ferry pier and the food is awaiting you, ready to take home! Just $48 for a complete set, including Chinese soup, including delivery. Daily changing 3 options, available from Wed - Sat, noon - 9pm.
Talking to their friend last night at Shrove Tuesday, who's also doing the intensive Facebook marketing - https://www.facebook.com/canaan.kitchen - this is expected to grow and become a regular offering on the Lamma foodie scene.

We loved the great, original food (think Man Kee before it changed ownership) made with high-quality ingredients. We highly recommend the extra options of a $15 (HUGE) pork chop or chicken fillets.
The single dinner was big enough for the two of us, plus enough left-overs to keep me happy for next day's lunch!

March events in Lamma Grill.

Sorry for the late post but didn't get the virtual poster till today and too inconvenient (or too lazy) to shoot their non-virtual banners outside the Lamma Grill and the Central Ferry Pier 4.

"Lamma's Got Talent" might be another Lamma First? Long discussed and anticipated, but only now becoming a real event, maybe the first of a little series?
